I recently pulled two long out of commission Red Caboose GP9s out of the dead line and did an interesting TMCC conversion. The lead unit has the motors and the trailing unit has the TMCC electronics, in this case an Electric RR Mini Commander 2. The two are tethered together. DTI 982 has a factory 3 rail chassis and the 985 was a built-up kit. The Red Caboose model has a horizontal Atlas/Roco drive so the traditional mounting of TMCC electronics in the powered unit was not possible. I built up the 985 a few years ago with a transplanted Atlas F9 drivetrain. For this project the drive was removed and the Mini Commander was installed. The 3rd rail pickup, ground and motor leads were spliced onto an RC plane harness with Molex connectors.

More pictures and details to come

Models are in a state of partial disassembly, please excuse any missing or misaligned parts.

LUCASWSU:

I recently acquired a Red Caboose GP7/9. I was unfamiliar with the Red Caboose models. Upon testing it, it ran fine by itself, until I add a single car. The gears kept slipping and it had a lot of issues trying to pull a single box car.

I am intrigued by the fact that you swapped out the the Red Caboose drivetrain with an Atlas. Can you give me information and photos of what you did. I am very interested in changing out the drivetrain and gears but don't know how to tackle it.

As for the electronics, I have a dummy unit that I installed ERR Cruise Commander and Sound since there is no room inside the GP. I just now need to get the drivetrain working.

Any information and help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

RAY
