This engine you're installing the reed switch on, seems to get it's  puff mechanically

from the side rod which then hits a lever. This lever then pushes a piston and a spring which will give you the puffs out of the smoke unit. So your chuffs won't be able to match your puffs. The only way to match the puffs and chuffs in this engine is if it has a cam between the drive wheels  that you can add lobes to it, to create 4 puffs and 4 chuffs. I looked up the parts list and i can't find a cherry switch or a cam, you can still create 4 chuffs with a reed switch and two magnets on the trailing truck wheels. But it won't match.

 

The only other way to create matching chuffs and puffs is by installing a fan driven smoke unit

and then add Henning's / John's super chuffer.

I just took another look at the parts diagram of your engine, there does seem to be a cherry switch from what i can see, so if there's a cherry switch it has to be activated by some kind of cam. if this is the case you won't need a reed switch, you can just build up lobes on the cam which hits the cherry switch and gets 4 chuffs that way. Here's a picture of the cherry switch

I get mine at Digikey and K&J Magnetics.

 

Depending on the space available between the wheel and the frame, I recommend either the D201-N52 or the D21B-N52.  One is thinner and may work where the thicker one doesn't.  You want the magnet within the width of a dime to the travel of the magnets and offset to one side so as not to get double chuffs.  I use this reed switch: MITI-3V1-6-12.5.
