removing lettering from Lionel new scale hi cubes

 

I know SIRT uses the Magic Eraser to remove lettering from Lionel cars. Have yet to try it myself as I haven't done any weathering in awhile.

My concern with this is going to be the very flat paint they applied once the logo is removed- it appears to be somewhat of a difficult shade to match- Let us know how you proceed. Where are you getting the decals to do this job? Just curious--

Some of us have developed several “get out of jail” techniques depending on the situation. Advice may work or not work for some depending on your skill or experience level.

Generally it may show sheen in that area after erasing. This can be hypnotized by spraying Dull Cote, clear matt spray or gloss spray over that area depending on your desired look. Next apply decals then Dull Cote over decals...

Last, select again a spray for the final clear finish you want to match like the rest of the car.

Since I weather everything, I don’t concentrate much on getting back to the MFG’s shiny stock look. On another note, I sometimes seek to have two shades on purpose as car data changes were made by the RR.

Looks like Lionel used the "GE" version of the logo for the cars. Read about the differences here. Doesn't make it correct for the cars but it is probably what was used as the source to make the logo.

Try sanding it with a fine grit sandpaper....should do the trick.....

OK I just picked up the Magic Eraser box is marked "ORIGINAL". Tried it on an Atlas box car, but the lettering never came off. I used it wet, which I assume you have to do.

 

So does it only work on Lionel equipment?

Try cutting a paper towel where it just fits over the logo, then soak paper towel with Solvaset.  This will it soak in a bit.  I would imagine after several applications it will begin to work.  Good luck.  Worse case scenario is car is oxide red so patching and repainting are possible also.
