Re: Removing shell from Lionel 221

I posted this in error on the Narrow O Forum. Anyway, I have a Lionel 221 that I put on the tracks after several decades, it sparked after about 3 feet and quit, now getting no power. It appears to me that the headlight wire has a bare spot and it is touching the shell. I want to remove it and check everything but there is a lot of small linkage on this and I'm not exactly sure where to start, I don't want to break anything as this is 100% original. Any suggestions, or tips from someone who has done this to a 221 would be appreciated.

You need to take the valve gear linkage off, and possibly the front truck. One screw in the top, and the shell comes off. Here is the service manual for it.
