I plan to run a couple of reversing loops on my new layout.  Is it necessary to power the switches separately, or can I just run them lf track power.  I will not be operating the switches, but will rely on the automatic derailing to change the switch positions.  There will be only one set of switches on each separately powered loop.

If you're running a command system (constant 18V or so on the rails), there should be enough power to reliably throw the switch. However, you might introduce some voltage spikes to the running rails that way, so installing some form of transient voltage suppression would be appropriate.

If you're running conventional where the track voltage could be a lot less, you might not have enough power to kick the points all the way over. Then, you'll need to run accessory power to the switches.
