OGR forum,

Attached is the plan for my "Rio Grande O Scale Division" now under construction.  Very loosely based on the D&RGW from Helper, Utah up Soldier Summit.  Double track main and two sets of twin tunnels as on the prototype.   Gives me the added bonus of running Utah Ry coal trains with Alco RSD 4/5s.  Overall dimensions 34’ x 24’.  Minimum mainline radius is 60” on outer main.  Best I could do and still maintain adequate aisles.  Wish I could have made it at least 68” radius.

This is an absolutely brilliant layout plan.  In my limited view, there are a lot of parallels to what Robert Meyer is doing and what Christopher is doing on his N&W layout. 

 

  • Both track plans utilize adequate radii to be able to run some fairly sizable motive power, and full length passenger cars.
  • Both track plans model specific prototype roads, with close attention paid to scenic details that make / will make the viewer "feel" like they are in the respective locations.
  • Both layouts feature absolutely wonderful attention to detail in the construction of the benchwork and beyond. 
  • Neither layout requires a field house to house the layout. 

 

Views of layout plans and photographs like this really make me want to reconsider O scale, but I am way too far gone down the HO path to go back.  So, I will have to live vicariously through others excellent modeling. 

 

I hope some magazine would feature both of these layouts at some point.  Both layouts represent the best that O scale has to offer.  I can't thank you all enough for allowing us to see such fantastic modeling on this forum, with Eric's photographs being the final icing on the cake.  

 

This thread, and John Sethian's excellent how-to on his eight axle flat car were outstanding reading on a rainy Saturday morning in Chicago.

I agree, excellent plan being well executed.

 

Fellow 0 scalers tempted to emulate this track plan in general terms for another prototype, or "freelanced prototype", but with greater traffic density than the DRGW will note the possibility exists to extend the helix down a level or two to provide a complete lower level devoted to staging, with the reversing loop in the other room;  a wye connection, at the expense of the two existing inner loop tracks, could provide access from either the Helper or Summit directions.  Alternately, if it were acceptable to run all trains via the staging level, the inner tracks could be replaced by a second helix, which would improve access and make civil engineering easier, especially allowing for minor adjustments of the helixes' -- er, helices' -- gradients.  Of course, all this costs more time and complexity in construction, but it is 'free' in terms of required room area.   Just a thought.
