I'm just passing this on. If nothing else, it's interesting that some kind of work will be started on them.

Contributions needed for Rock Island E Units restoration.

Mid-American has been very patient with me by storing the two Rock  Island E units (E-6 #630 and E-8#652) for some time. They need room for  other business now so we have to get the project going. Cosmetic restoration and FRA compliance is to be done to each unit starting soon. The cost will  be just under $125,000 for each unit and the project must be paid in full by  end of June. We will be applying for various grant funds, but really need  some assistance in raising the necessary money for this project.  Contributions are tax deductible.
We can provide a PayPal invoice with an email address and contribution  amount. Thanks

Hot Water, I'd agree with you. It has been a long time now that the two E's have been at Mid-America. Awhile back I recall reading on line that they were going to be restored to running condition, not just more or less repainted as mentioned in the original post. Is $125k a bit high just for some paint for an E? What does "FRA compliance" mean if they're not going to be running?

Not at all, especially considering all the "body work" that would be required prior to actually painting.

What does "FRA compliance" mean if they're not going to be running?

Air brake rebuild and inspections, foundation brakes & rigging, wheels, and safety appliances. All must be in compliance in order to be moved in interchange service.

Rock Island didn't to anything with any consistency concerning portholes, square windows, or filters on its EMC and EMD E- and F-units. It looked like the preference of the Foreman in charge of the carbody work being done was the deciding factor, but I think it was more of an internal Mechanical Department lack of adherence to standards that prevailed in many ways on Rock Island diesel locomotives.

However several E-units and some F-units did have all the portholes/windows removed.  This meant that the engine room was exclusively dependent on light bulbs for illumination, and I personally doubt that they were consistently maintained, since nothing else about Rock Island diesels was consistent.
