I just checked Charles Ro online and sure enough they show all 4 American Flyer 4-8-4 Northerns in stock.

I ordered the Frisco Northern.

My CC hasn't been charged yet but I expect it to be processed tomorrow.

As luck would have it the Lion Chief Universal remote which will allow control of any 3 Lion Chief (some), Lion chief +(all), and/or Flyer Chief (all) with a single remote is now also in stock.

I ordered one as now I will have two Flyer Chief engines...a PE Berk and now the Frisco Northern. The Universal remote is numbered 6-83071 and costs $40.00 from Ro. So with the addition of this remote I won't have to juggle two remotes if I run both engines at the same time. From the 3-rail side I hear that people who have already received them like them and find them easy to use.

My guess is that Lionel will begin to release many (well... some) AF engines in the Flyer Chief operating system. It costs less than Legacy to produce, uses a low cost remote and offers many of the options found on higher priced engines such as smoke, lights, Railsounds, electrocoupler and so far diecast engines. If I had to guess I'd say we might see a GP7/9 , a Baldwin switcher and more Docksiders since they have already done the Docksider in a Flyer Chief set...6-47958. The Lionel shipping schedule shows that set due in February 2017.

If you want a Northern but haven't ordered one yet you better hurry as they were BTO. Ro usually orders extras but not too many.

My Frisco shipped today. I wasn't going to get one until I saw how nice the pre-production model looked at the last October York meet. I think the extra few that dealers ordered will quickly sell out once folks have actually seen these nice locomotives. I'm not sold on the Built to Order business model, especially for a  moderately priced FlyerChief loco. Just my two cents.

.... These are Northerns are remakes of cast engine shells that already had and used years ago. The Berks were a new engine shell.  Let's see what are in the next catalog to see if the next steam engine has them.

Just so there is no confusion, please permit a friendly comment. When Lionel reissued the AF Northerns for conventional operation during the last decade they made virtually all-new tooling to fabricate and assemble those engines. About the only piece of carry-over tooling from Gilbert was the pilot. Notice in comparison, for example, that the cross section of the boiler casting is more round (and prototypically more correct) than the Gilbert casting.

Enjoy your New Year Northerns!

Bob

So what is every ones impression? I finally got to "play" with one. And my initial impression is that Lionel is upping their game with this. It is exceptionally detailed for a reissue casting. Flyerchief features have improved with smoke and sound. I look forward to what they may release in the future. I hope it's new tooling though. Or a Hudson.

Yes got my NYC yesterday. Like the engine. Like the smoke.i have to get a bigger bottle of smoke fluid. Puts out a lot of smoke. Not to happy with the chuff sound. A good sounding whistle and it sounds better with the chuff turned off. The Berks chuffing sounds better. I also have the UP 800 northern. Th chuff of the two sound almost alike. I would have liked if they kept the light in the cab like the 800. All I all I like the engine.

To to pay for it.

This loco is Bluetooth enabled, designed by Lionel engineering in California.  The soon to be released LC App and Universal Remote will operate loco, this loco has all new electronics and 32 speed steps (not 16 like past LC/LC+) locos.  Lots of cool upgrades on setting the volume, firing the coil coupler, and dialog operations.  Just the beginning of what LC and LC+ products will bring in 2017!

That is really cool. I was all ready considering buying the universal remote. Will the App control the older Berkshires also? or just the newest Northern's. Im exited for the app for you guys. Gotta work that technology in. I hope you keep selling trains for along time. My nieces and nephews all like the lionchief b/c they can use it.

Well my luck holds, went to Hennings Saturday to pick mine up (would have taken a Milwaukee or New York Central and was informed that the supplier ran out before they got to Hennings.  They only received a UP.  Drat!

So much for preordering, I now know your frustration Rusty.

At least the hobby is going in the right direction. Happy New Year everyone!

I received my Frisco 4501 on Friday:

Test ran it today and it runs beautifully on my r20 Fastrack layout. The engine performed flawlessly in forward and reverse. The smoke unit is a vast improvement over the PE Berk IMO. The smoke unit continues to produce volumes of smoke at a standstill as a real engine might. The speed steps run from extremely slow (I didn't measure the speed) to pretty fast (I didn't hit top end...r20 curves to consider).

When you get your engine the first thing you'll notice is how l-o-n-g the box is. 27.5":

That's good as Lionel has taken great precaution to protect these beautiful engines. The usual foam inner box cradles the engine and tender separately. The remote is held in the lid of the foam cradle. The remote requires 3 AAA batteries (not supplied).

Operation is simple. Put engine on track, power up track to 18VAC or 18VDC. The engine headlight will start to blink and the tender will sound a 3 note chime. That means it is looking for the remote. Turn on the remote, the chime stops the headlight goes to steady burn and the engine sounds start. Add about 4-6 drops of smoke fluid to be sure there is enough in the engine. The smoke will start in a few seconds and flow from the stack with the engine at a standstill. Turn the remote dial to the right and the engine moves forward. Turn to the left for reverse. There is no front coupler but the rear coupler is an electrocoupler. To operate it hold down the middle sound (announcement) button (shows a microphone and the word SHIFT) and at the same time depress the bell button (also shows a coupler image). The rear coupler will open. The bell and whistle are very nice. The announcements are of the vintage railsounds variety with different ones for different circumstances. To stop the engine for good turn off track power. Don't forget to turn off the remote or it will drain the batteries eventually.

The paint and graphics are first rate. The windows have "glass" on both sides of the engine. The backhead is detailed. 2 cab figures in the cab. The marker lights on the front are plastic jewels (non-illuminated). The wire handrails are separately applied and painted blue. The pop-off valves and whistle and bell on top are of a gold color. The engine has typical standing number boards showing 4501 along with that number shown 3 times on the smoke box door. The blue and gray (whitish) colors are vibrant. The drive rods are of darkened metal. The front, rear and tender side frames are painted blue like the engine. The red METEOR graphic really sets off the tender. Truly a beautiful engine that looks like it faithfully recreates the original example in a modest American Flyer kind of way:

Don't be a rivet counter on this example...it'll ruin your fun.

I really like the huge puffs of smoke the stack delivers when the engine is at a crawl. Add some blasts of the deep tone whistle and itll bring a smile to your face!

Here's a few more pics. Better get this one ordered or you'll miss out like many other Berk-less S gaugers are now.

Enjoy your engine!

Absolutely: They did an outstanding job with the paint/graphics on the Frisco engine.

I'm somewhat a hypocrite: Whereas I can marvel at some of the ornate liveries many of the smaller engines of the 19th century wore, I somehow stumble at colorful schemes on modern era steam power.  When it comes to modern steam, I guess "black is beautiful" would be an applicable slogan for me!

Bluetooth is nice, but how about making it so one can use a Legacy Cab2 handheld in a reasonably seemless fashion with FC engines?

The O Gaugers have been asking for that ever since the introduction of LionChief and Lionel has not complied.

My smart phone (or IPad/tablet) is both Wi-Fi and Bluetooth enabled. I wonder if Lionel or MTH(or someone's grandchild)  is developing an App that would allow you to operate both Legacy and FlyerChief, and DCS  from your smart phone or IPad/tablet. Or if this is even feasible.

Mike

So I finally got around to opening my 3 up.  I have gone pretty much scale highrail but I just love the northerns.  I sold my 2006ish era Milwaukee Road and UP 800 to help pay for the FC versions.  I also bought the Frisco 4501, total impulse buy, thinking the color scheme would be a hit with my kids.

Here is a picture, the poor lighting didn't help...

IMG_0527

My initial impressions -

the good; with about 20 minuets run time on the Frisco, runs well, the constant smoke at rest with the smoke fan is really nice, and I think the coal load might be an improvement in appearance over Lionel's last run of northerns.

The could have been better; the railsounds on this is not really that good, the chuff and bell are kinda poor sounding, particularly when compared to the Berkshire.  I am pretty sure the chuff on the 2006 version sounds better.

Overall I would give it a "B+" for a grade.  I am more in for the legacy scale pieces, but this FlyerChief thing has been entertaining.

And my 5 year old's face instantly lit up when he seen the colorful Frisco unit.

Ben
