Just back from my in-laws that live in Alliance Ne.  We get out there 3-4 times a year.  My son and I had a good time chasing trains. Mostly coal drags but they are our favorite type of runs. Sorry but I did add lots of photos.    Nick

My Father-in-law remembers his dad taking grain to this old elevator in the 50s.

The old pot ash plants during WW1 by Antioch, just 15 miles east of Alliance.  They closed down shortly after WW1.  The guard did use them for target practice in WW2, you will notice some divots in them.

I think this a GP 60 slug, never seen one before.

They had a Sd70ACe and ES44ac on display plus large cookout and free gadgets.

Thanks for the pictures. I didn't know any BN C30-7 units still existed.

 

BNSF 341 is not a slug, it is a fully-configured (ex Santa Fe) GP60 B unit.

(A slug does not have a prime mover; its traction motors are powered by a unit it is mated to.  The B-unit, of course, has everything except the cab and is controlled by m.u. connections to the lead unit in the consist.) I recently saw two GP60B's in a consist north of Stanwood, WA; they are apparently getting around quite a bit as BNSF deals with their power shortages.

Thanks for the info on the GP60.  Their will be lots of old power coming out of retirement soon for Bn.  Nick

Yes the tunnel is by-passed and opened now.  We were able to find the south entrance thanks to some help from a couple of electricians, it is not well marked.  We always drive through Crawford on the way to Cooke City in the winter.  I finally modeled the diamond in Crawford with C&NW as I envisioned it.  Have some pics somewhere of what is left of the real thing.  Really appreciate the reminisces of the older hands.
