A simple spoiler would allow it to do either stay on the track or get off.  And yes, I also thought that it wasn't a jet, just a prop driven train car.  Also notice that it was slower when the video was from behind?  That's because to work it needed to push against something, mostly air.  But when the coupled car was on the rear, the air stream was basically pushing against itself.  Like trying to move a car while sitting in said car pushing on the dash.

 

But even with that in mind (Which I have to since I'm a mechanical engineer.), it sure looked like fun, and I want to try it!

Good thought.....I was wondering if the old Jetex model motors were still around and found this:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jetex  There were some model glider designs (way back when) that had a Jetex rocket in the tail for hand-held launching. The Rapier jet seems to have disappeared too.

 

For further fun in the privacy of your own home, just Google "miniature pulse jet" and find a sacrificial flatcar............
