I just downloaded SCARM  today as I need to update my basement floor empire due to the acquisition of a MTH turntable. I didn't feel like doing it the old lay it out on the floor way and trying on paper if it's not to scale is a waste of time.  I sketched my current layout, went upstairs downloaded SCARM and was making progress in less than 30 minutes. The program is very good and very easy to understand. The first JPG file is the current layout, The blue inner oval is 027 track that I ran my #68 inspection car on since it's closer to Standard Scale than Lionel o27.  It looked pretty good with the Standard Gauge trains. The second JPG is the new proposed layout incorporating the new turntable.  It grew a little wider and I would have liked to go further but the wife insists on being able to walk through the basement. If anyone has any thoughts on improvements please let me know. The only other limitation I have is that I only have 6 switches.

I really enjoy playing with this program! I think I have a pretty reasonable plan now. I've added one more switch (which I'll need to buy) and quite a bit of track. Some of my current track is cleaned up original Lionel which I'll replace with USA Tracks new products. As somewhat of an aside here when I first starting building my basement setup I bought a lot of MTH curves, every one of them had shorts on the center rail from cut insulators. When I emailed and called MTH about this I got ignored so they won't be getting more of my money.  As for the future the latest plan below should work for me until I can get to build a real permanent layout.

If anyone has any suggestions for improvements please let me know.

Pete,

On your latest design I noticed it has 7 switches.... not 6. But they are easy to come by.

One thing I saw right off the bat was on your inner turntable loop, and the fact that you can easily make a reverse loop out of it. With just one more switch, continue the straight-thru track around to the inner most loop. This way you can reverse the direction of any train on the layout. You may need to do a little fudging with the track to make it work.

I have included a picture of the change. It is not SWARM, but done in RR-Track.
