I would guess for the big two, Lionel and MTH, the following would be considered.
Past sales of specific RR's.
Frequency of specific locos or rolling stock.
Tooling requirements.
Manufacturing expense vs profit.
From all appearances, looks like they are doing a very good job in selecting products that are attractive to our hobby. Somebody at Menards knows what they are doing.
Bill, PTC, that was kinda what I was tryin to state - do they have train staff at Menards? Is it done on a "hmmmm...think I want one of THOSE..." basis by only Mr Menard? I wouldn't think they devote much marketing staff to train stuff, but what do I know?
