Seeking info about prewar Lionel 2-4-2 steam loco #1664

The 1664 is a good runner that uses the same sheet-metal side frame motor as the 1688s. The rear plate that holds the motor to the casting has a triangular plate & is somewhat shorter than a 1688. Later versions of the 1664 had the motor field & armature mounted on a diecast frame.....Think of a 1684/1665 motor & that is what they look like.

I think Chuck Sartor might have a motor for this kind of engine. He is also on this forum & can help you out. Have fun.

I've always had the urge to bolt a 1656 switcher mechanism into one of these (the later version with the die-cast motor.)  Not sure if it would work, but if it did, I think it would sort of be the ultimate Columbia!

I found a really nice 1664 shell at a flea market. I put a 6 drivered motor in it. 

That's an interesting conversion. When I find time I'll have to do more investigating with my available parts to see what I can do with my 1664 shell.

since the 1664 uses the same shell as the 1666/224 it's a simple conversion. I did have to drill a rear motor mounting screw hole in the little dome in front of the cab where the 224's motor mounts.
