Short on New Locomotive

Is it still stock? Have you swapped out the wheels?

When the switch is set to 3 rail, it will short on two rail track.

What is your track, 2 rail or 3?

It came with scale wheels.  I am running on 3 rail track.  The only thing I did was to add the rollers to make it run on 3 rail.  The settings are 3 rail and DCS.

I was trying to figure if there is something else I need to do before taking it apart and look for shorted wires and the like.

The part number is 22-20430-2. This is the first 22- series engine in my collection so I don't know if I need to do anything differently than a 20- or 30- engine.

Is this new?  If so call MTH for RA, or back to dealer.  Could be shorted board, or something wrong with wiring.  You could try 2 Rail on a small loop with rollers removed.  If it works, then something up with wiring from rollers to switch.  G

Look under the switches you mentioned.  I have run into two where the wires on the switch burned up. 

Since this was brand new and never was run, I took it back to the store and it will be shipped back to MTH.  If it was an older engine, I would have opened it up.

I did a spot check as well as the store to see if there was something obvious.  I took an ohmmeter and it was shorted on both trucks.

I really liked the engine and hope to get it back soon.  It was an SD70ACe in EMD demonstrator colors with fixed pilot and scale wheels.  If this works out on my layout, I will try to get more engines like this.

What was shorted?  Center rail pickup to chassis ground?  By chance did you switch the switch to 2R and see if short cleared?  Could be the switch was installed backwards.  G

Look at what I stated.  It is out there as an issue.

I got the engine back and one of the wires to the motor was shorted to a screw.  Repaired and running on my layout.
