As for realism, details, silly things......  A layout is viewed in the context of the whole. In other words visitors see the panorama but not each item on the layout as a stand alone feature.  From what I have seen no one shows up to see a layout with a microscope to focus on all of the minute detail. Detail that is seen as part of the overall view is good but the fine detail that seems to excite the profound scale model railroaders and "rivet counters" is hardly ever noticed.

You see the same thing in pretty much every hobby:

  • Anyone who doesn't do it the level of dedication or time/expense (and in this case, detail), isn't on your level and therefore isn't worth the regard
  • Anyone who dedicates a lot more time/money/whatever than you doesn't have a life and needs to understand that it's supposed to be fun

Silliest thing about this hobby? Us old men playing with toys and acting like it really matters....

I am 39 and still play with trains!

At 39 you're just a little boy still............

I'm finding some of THE silliest things about this hobby are embedded in the posts on this forum.
