Smoke Fluid

I do not think you should worry about this.

A guy I know who really likes smoke was running a couple of trains in a small RR building. The doors were open on a chilly day because the smoke detectors were going off.  So, I would imagine it is a matter of "how much".

Remember that the smoke fluid in your model trains does NOT actually produce "smoke'! It is a white oil vapor substance, that pretty quickly falls down onto your layout.

Not too sure about that. In my old PW Lionels there is a very hot heating element in the smoke unit. I have done a lot of experimenting with smoke fluid and make and use my own. Not going to say what I use in it but think there is smoke produced. I really can't find evidence of any oil residue deposited on my layout.  But that is mine, others might behave differently.

I have never seen or had a smoke detector go off because of a toy train.

I have removed the smoke detector in my train room for that very reason. When I would run my MTH Centipedes it would set off the smoke detector in the train room and in the hall outside the train room.

The little RR exhibit where they had to open doors to keep the detectors from going off was so thick with smoke-like a fog. The guy used MTH fluid and "liked smoke".  I like just a nice white trail coming out of the stack then dissipating.  Sign of a well fired engine and good Pa. coal.
