I have an mth railking gs4 that needs a battery, can i use a regular 9volt rechargeable battery or do i have to use the mth battery?
Second when changing sound sets does drive wheel size on steam locos matter?

No don't not use 9volt rechargeable battery just only temp. and best use the mth battery or BCR.

Drive wheel size / Gear ratio does matter.
Look for a sound file from the same line of engine Premier or Railking. Then look for the Railroad you want. Then verify it is for the correct voltage boards.
If you stick with railking you'll be pretty close. Just like premier will do the same.
However you have to find a 5volt file. You can't swap 5volt with 3volt.

You can use a 9V alkaline battery temporarily. Any 8.4V rechargeable battery can be used permanently.
Yes, gear ratio and wheel size matter to scale speed. You can use it, but scale speed will be off unless you adjust the tach tape. Adding more stripes slows the engine down and reducing stripes speeds it up.
You also have to stick to 5V sound files as Ralph stated. G
