Interesting... Who did he talk with at Charles Ro?  Their website still has the Daylight cab forward listed.

Technically, I don't think these were BTO items, but I suspect their popularity will make them tough to find within a couple months of delivery -- if not sooner.

You might also check Sidetrack Hobbies, Nicholas Smith Trains, and Trainworld.

UUUGGGH!  How do I unsee that unprototypical abomination?  The marketing guys at Lionel should be strung upside down by their toes with piano wire for disrespecting the legacy of this great locomotive!

At least MTH has maintained a sense of sanity and not done the same with theirs; although that one RailKing Santa Fe Hudson they offered in Warbonnet Colors about 10 years back did warrant a bit more scrutiny into what are thinking sometimes...

And to all those consumers who endorsed & encouraged such blasphemic behavior of Lionel, may Santa Claus leave cheap toilet paper in your stockings so that you get splinters when nature calls after your Christmas dinner.

Haven't you heard Jack?  The real reason these were delayed was because the Daylight paint scheme was considered a factory error and was immediately recalled to correct it!  That way everyone who ordered this particular one would end up being the proud owner of a locomotive painted the way SP (and the forces of nature in the Universe) intended it to be.

Au contraire; those that think a fantasy Daylight painted Cab Forward is cool are the ones that need help, actually.

So in that regard, do your friend a favor and steer him towards the enlightened path of prototypical correctness and tell him to get a GS-2 or GS-4 class Northern to get his Daylight paint scheme fix, and get the correct freight scheme version of the Cab Forward to get his cab forward fix.  Then he can avoid all that other non-prototypical heresy other lost souls have indulged in.

Waiting eagerly for good old Brian (Passenger Train Collector) to chime in with what I know he will say, wherefore art thou Brian?

John,

I'm sure you know this ribbing is all in good-natured fun however; Marty DID post the first picture.  And you KNOW what they say about "first strikes"... anything thereafter is just Copy Cat

Although I must admit, your retaliatory strike was a good one!

But, no support for ya here - I got a #4275 on order along with #4014.  Fly Buster Brown, FLY!!!  Its gotta get here so I can play with it before I watch The Buckeyes open a can of whoop-xxx on The Tide...

Best,

Dave

It is blasphemy, of course, but we can handle it.  Like Hot says, relief is just a can of Rustoleum away.

The SP had Daylight paint on Atlantics, two different kinds of Pacifics, and several Mountains, in addition to the Northerns.  Some locomotives got green boilers with oxide cab roofs and raised nickel silver numbers and road name.  The 0-6-0 that still needs to be done in die cast came in several paint schemes with a colorful SP logo on the cab.  I saw a 4-10-2 with a grey boiler.  And in the end, a lot of scarlet paint was applied to injectors, check valves, and window frames/doors.  You want colorful, SP had it.

From where I sit, Marty and the beautiful Daylight Cab Forward win hands down.  Sales of this great looking locomotive speak for themselves.

Brian, this locomotive is going to look awesome hooked to your K-Line passenger consist.  I can't wait to see the complete train on your beautiful layout.

Frankly I just don't get it. As a life long fan of the Southern Pacific I can't understand why Lionel or any other model train manufacturer would produce a 'fantasy' paint scheme for AC12 engines except of course to move unsold units or make more money. If the SP wanted to paint any of their cab forwards in 'Daylight' colors, which is highly unlikely, they would have done so many years ago for publicity. Yes its true the SP used a few cab forwards for passenger train work but none of them were ever painted in 'Daylight' colors. Basic black was good enough for the SP and its good enough for me. Fantasy paint schemes are just fantasy - nothing more or less than another way of marketing over produced units!

All of that is very true.  You just missed the part of this hobby that says some of us don't care whether something is prototypical or not.  The element of whimsy adds an escape from reality.  And if these fantasy paint schemes help folks achieve that goal, that's all the reason anyone should need.  And beside that, it's not as if the Daylight paint scheme is the  only one that Lionel produced here.  Purist can choose from 3 other units if an all-black version is what they would prefer.  Easy solution.    No need for all the fuss.

You'd think that the traditionally sized trains and animated cars / accessories like giraffe cars & oversized gatemen of past & present would take care of the escaping of reality tenfold if that were the case.

Besides, Lionel didn't even offer a non-Daylight version of this particular cab number.

I just can't understand why some persistent members take this O gauge train hobby so seriously.  When O gauge trains were first produced they were toys to bring fun and joy to people.  There was no criticism of size, color, road numbers, etc., they were made to play with and enjoy.  There should be no difference in this concept today.  They are toy trains, maybe expensive, but still toy trains.  Whether scale, traditional O, S, HO,N or G in size they are still manufactured to play with and have fun with.

Those of you who take this hobby so seriously and forget that other members can purchase and enjoy whatever type train they want to, are forgetting what this hobby is all about.......having fun......not criticizing those who are trying to have fun.

"Fantasy paint schemes are just fantasy - nothing more or less"

Well, this part of what you have to say is absolutely correct.

"except of course to move unsold units"

This part of your critique is completely incorrect. Where have you been all these months since Lionel announced the Daylight version of the Cab Forward? The Daylight version has greatly outsold the prototypical versions. I do not call this product dumping and neither should you.
