Well, I just received my beautiful Lionel SP Tank Train Set, the 6-31718:

Unfortunately, despite doing an entire weeks worth of research, I somehow must have gotten that set confused with another Lionel SP Set I was looking at first, and also purchased, the  Lionel 6-11940, which is a Warhorse Series SP Coal Train Set  AND "Weathered".

Although, I knew the 6-31718 was a double engine "Tank Train", and the 6-11940 a single engine TMCC "Coal Train", I was 100% convinced that the 6-31718 was also "Weathered" and Legacy, not TMCC.

I guess the fact that there is a newer Tank Train I also looked at, the Lionel 6-29366, which is just like the 6-31718, except it has only one engine, confused me as well:

As a result, in reality only the 'Warhorse" version is weathered, and not the 31718....not only that the 31718 is TMCC, and not Legacy like the 6-29366.

Thus, I ended up with a set that was not weathered and not Legacy!

I have no idea how I fouled this up and am not sure to be angry at myself or concerned about this lapse of thinking...I am serious..up until I opened the box and freaked out and then went back and read everything "again" did I see that there was nothing that mentioned Legacy or Weathered on this set.

How the heck did I mess this up?

Had I realized this, I would have just bought 2 sets of the Warhorse, and that would have given me 2 "weathered" SP SD40s TMCC Diesels and 8 cars!

All for a price that is half of what I paid for the set of 2 SD40-2Ts and 8 tank cars.

Even worse, I could have bought the newer Legacy version, the 6-29366 albiet with only 1 Loco and 4 Tank Cars, and added the 2nd Loco, and even the 4 tank car expansion and paid the same, but gotten Legacy instead of TMCC.....

I do not want to return it, as I will probably have to pay shipping and a restocking fee, and lug it into the car and out and to the UPS store; even though I can buy the 3 separate Legacy items from the same dealer and get what I wanted....which in reality was a "weathered SP set" even if it was TMCC.

LOL I know what you are thinking...WHAT A GOOBER!

Anyway, I do like the set, and will probably keep it, and be much much more careful next time...which I thought I had done...but didnt.

Hey chipset,

The 6-31718 set, AFAIK, is a pretty hard-to-find set.  I own almost all of the Tanktrain sets and add-on's that Lionel has released. It took me awhile to track down a 6-31718 set.

I think it is a great set.  If you decide to get rid of it, you should be able to get a good price for it. I don't think you should feel bad at all.

I saw the Warhorse ATSF set once and looked for and acquired the weathered box cars. Some duplicates. Several of them had die cast frames and some didn't. I found die cast frames at North Lima Trainworks so they are a really nice set of cars. I never got the engine, but they look good with a 3759
