am adding the err cruise commanders to a couple of lionel RS-3's but there is very little room for the speakers. I found a nice rectangular speaker from soundtraxx, The 810115  35mm X  20mm that fits perfect  in the underframe, it is 8 ohm but it is 1 watt / 2watts peak power.  Will this replace the speaker that comes with the err sound card? There is also one from DCC hobby supply AHD Medium Oval Speaker has the same dimensions but it says it is only 1 watt.

The parts list calls it the underframe but yes it is the fuel tank, the inside area is 1.75" X 1.125" (44mm X 28mm). I believe the body and frame of my RS-3 is a little different than the lionchief, My RS-3 has a rectangular speaker area in the fuel tank. I have a baby fatboy speaker but I just can't get it into the fuel tank area and with an enclosure it won't fit inside the body shell.

There was a recent thread about Tang Band speakers that are supposed to sound really good. I think it was in the DCC forum. I'll see if I can find a link...I think this is the one: Is This Engine Sound Truly Coming Out of This PRR Trainmaster FM?

If you search for ' Tang Band ' there are a couple more threads showing as well. Of course, they say the DCC decoder sounds are really improving too, so some of the sound quality might be from the decoder?

The resonant frequency (fs) is 480 hz. Thats about the same as the cheapest pancake speakers that most of the train manufacturers used to use 10-15 years ago. The lower the fs the better. Look for something 230 hz or lower.

I see what you mean - that knocks out a lot of them - kind of going by size mostly

I believe the ERR Railsounds board is rated for 1 Watt. Another source for small speakers is Railmaster Hobbies. Not as good as the Fatboys but the best I have found so far for their size.

I have used the 1.06" round speaker and enclosure as listed on the Railmaster site above in several small steam locomotive tenders.  It has a low end of 200 hz and sounds really good.  The secret is the enclosure, make sure and use that.  It handles 2 watts, so no worries about blowing it out.DHB27-8DHB27-8
