I sent the following email to Lionel this evening. They're really good at replying the next day but I thought I'd post it here to see if anyone wanted to weigh in.

Hi,

I have a Chessie SD40-2 with TMCC (6-28524). I run my layout with a LEGACY CAB-1L Command Set, a 180-watt PowerHouse transformer and a LEGACY PowerMaster.

Last running session the locomotive stopped moving on its own although the Railsounds and lighting continued. It started moving again slowly and then eventually came to a stop.

I measured track voltage with the train still on the track and got a reading in the low 12s. My Atlas TMCCs and Lionel LEGACIES will operate around 17.5-18 volts.

After I picked up the engine I could feel a lot of heat coming off the truck blocks.

I had this loco in for repair in February (RA#8048443). It's been running great ever since until now.

Thanks,

Rob

When I sent it in for repairs it was to replace one of the can motors. The locomotive took off at full speed once I applied track power. Turned out that a magnetic ring on one of the motors shattered so the motor was replaced.

I'm thinking that something is jamming up the gears or motor, too.

Lionel replied, like they always do the next day (Great customer service, by the way), and asked me if I'd like to send it back for repair. $60 labor plus whatever part(s) need replaced. No big deal. I've done it before and I really like this engine, probably more than my LEGACIES.

This loco has Odyssey I speed control so it only runs in 32-speed step mode. I've been kicking around the idea of replacing it with an ERR Cruise Commander which should smooth out the low speed jerkiness. Presumably, since it needs repaired anyway and is not under warranty (manufactured in 2001) I'm going to check with Weaver Models to see if they can fix whatever is wrong and install a Cruise Commander since they offer this service for like $155. Lionel will only fix the issue I reported. I'm pretty certain they don't offer upgrades.

A quick look at the underside didn't seem to reveal any anomalies. The gears are greased and the axles lubed.

Rob,

We can repair and install a Cruise "M". The best part is we only charge for parts used and return shipping.

All yours, Bill. Thanks for the replies everyone!

I took off the shell and disassembled the rear truck where I thought the gears may have been jammed. I was able to spin the flywheels on both motors freely by hand with no resistance from any of the gears. I placed it on the track and it took every command except the throttle.

Should I contact you via your email to set up a return? I can ship this next Tuesday from work. I'm off tomorrow and things will probably be slow this weekend on account of the holiday.

OK...perfect opportunity for me to interject here on behalf of OGR.  First, I want to thank ALL of you that spend so much of your time and talent as well as vast knowledge in order to help those folks that are having issues with their trains.  It never ceases to amaze me and ALL of you are an asset to our forum and to the hobby as well as to the members.

Now...here is where we have a problem.  It is our fiduciary duty at OGR to support and protect the advertising investment that individuals / businesses make here on the forum as well as the magazine.  In most cases these folks invest hundreds if not thousands of dollars to attract business from our magazine and forum for their services and products.  Those that do, we allow to promote themselves directly here on the forum within their posts including contact info and even down to asking for member's business.  It is part of what we include when they are willing to support the forum and magazine financially....they help the readership have a magazine and forum in which to participate.  For those folks that don't have the budget or have some other reason for not "advertising", then we ask that you do not solicit business within the body of your post.  Understand that there is nothing wrong with having a "title" in your signature but we do not want direct links, phone numbers, email addresses, or requests to contact either in the body of the post or withing the signature.  All of that info should be within your profile so even under those circumstances, another member can still make contact with you if they so desire.

OK...now, I suppose I need to explain why OGR feels this way and has this policy even though for most, it is obvious.  Why would anyone pay to promote their products and services openly on the forum if they have to compete with others that don't do so?  Doesn't seem fair does it?  Well, it isn't!  To try to discuss this with folks on a personal level, I made calls to several of you.  Those of you that were willing to talk to me were very understanding and supportive and we have noticed that you are still willing to help individuals in need.  I am sure that you are still getting a share of the business through private contact and that is just fine.  A couple of folks never returned my calls or emails for perhaps their own reasons but please be on notice that we are deleting any references within threads that solicit business.  This takes valuable time and so soon we may have to start moderation on those threads so that we meet the obligations we have to our service advertisers.

Finally, I want to ask that ALL of you to please take this post in the spirit it is intended.  There is no malice or threat intended here and only the request of playing fairly.

All the Best,

Alan
