TA the square I used is 5/16ths. Just happen to have one close to the collars I had ground into cams.

 

I can't find the construction thread I started. It got moved.

So what I did I bought some small cherry switches made by Gilmore from an electronics store. These were packaged as micro switches. I've seen smaller.

 

I created a crude brass mount for the switch and mounted it to a tender truck to replace the reed switch. In the photos you can see I ground a model airplane wheel collar to an oblong shape which will work perfect for 4 chuffs per driver revolution.

 

To get 8 chuffs I had to go to a square that I found of roughly the same dimensions. t is a press fit on the wheel axle.

 

You will have to use a wheel puller to get a wheel off and then use a wrench socket as a mandrel to press the wheel back on. I used an 11/16ths socket.
