I have an RK 0-6-0 B6 switcher from 2001 (30-1170-1). Way back then the tach tape let go and 2 or 3 times MTH sent me the wrong tach tape. I gave up and applied it anyway. It ran fine, but chuff and smoke were always out of sync. Recently, this locomotive started running erratically (very jerky). I suspect that the tach tape has let go again. As near as I can tell, I should have a 27 mm (diameter of flywheel?) tach tape, but what I have is the 30 mm. I have downloaded the pdf image that I found on the OGR forum for printing. Is this the best way to go and what do I print on; glossy or flat? I'm thinking sticky label paper. I still have the original tach tape and the adhesive turned yellow. It probably wouldn't be working today even if it was adhered to the flywheel.

Make sure you're printing it at actual size.  I just downloaded and printed it, it came out exactly the same size as the stock MTH tach tape sheet that comes in the upgrade kits.  Top is what I just printed from the documentation thread, bottom is the gummed label set from an upgrade kit.  The slight apparent difference is because it was a bit closer to the camera, I should have cut it off and laid it flat.  I can assure you, it comes out exactly the right size.

It turns out that all the sensor needs is the transition black to white or vice versa.

I changed the gearbox on an MTH Hudson, and knew the chuff would be off.  I merely adjusted the number of black stripes with paint and a shaky paint brush.  Worked fine.  No need for perfect spacing.  I get a chuff for every 90 degrees of driver rotation.

Not rocket science - the stripes do not need to be uniform; just the correct number.
