Thank you all for your kind words. We do it or done it for you all. I am proud to say I have served for OUR country. Thank you again.

Thanks everyone for the kind words and I too am proud to have served during a time of war in Viet Nam.

Thanks to all who served and we should never take our freedom for granted,there are many factions trying to undermine our way of life.

Agreed. My thanks to American men and women willing to serve to protect the freedom we all enjoy. I appreciate your sacrifice every day. I am also in memory of my Father who served during the Korean War 1951-52. He served as an MP and one of his duties was to check trains as they moved between north and south.

I would like to add in my heart felt thanks and admiration for all service members, past and present.  It is very heartening to see the level of support veterans receive today from their friends, neighbors and folks all around the country.  This is very much different than when I returned home from Vietnam in 1969.  Public support was quite different.

 

i would really  like to thank everyone here who has taken a minute of their time to remember and to be grateful.  I know that it means an awful lot.

 

FYI - There are lots of very young veterans coming home today who also need our support very much.  I would ask that should you ever happen to come across one in your daily travels and have the opportunity, please take a minute to tell them how much you appreciate them.  It will mean a lot.  

 

God Bless those for whom this day exists.

Thank you every one, the guys who did it and the guys who are doing it.  Very poignant

shows on America's defense history and its personnel losses on "60 Minutes" and the PBS

"National Memorial Day Concert" just watched on TV.

Not that I don't agree with sentiments here, but a reminder...

 

For over one hundred years, this holiday has been in remembrance of the dead.

 

Those that not only served, but gave their lives in the line of duty.

 

Memorial Day, Decoration Day call it what you like.

 

But "thank you" between the living, is for other days.

 

This day is for prayer and remembrance of those that did lose their lives.

I had posted this to family on Facebook yesterday.  You have to think the evil in the world since 80 years ago has not changed a lot, it's still there.  We take so much for granted.

Wonderful day yesterday.  I was helping with a family remodel project, spent some time at the cemetery, and late in the day visited an old friend, World War  2  vet. He is 94. His daughter, and friends, had been working on scrap books of his Pacific war pictures and Camp Lejeune.  He said at the time Camp Lejeune was new (1943). He had a small Kodak camera, and a small radio.  He said he was not allowed to have either.  The scrap books were fascinating. Many pictures of Japan during... occupation. He always speaks highly of Harry Truman, and the decision to drop the (2) bombs.  Sad, as I drove home, thinking the number of people, who probably don't know anything about Camp Lejeune, and the history there. Another few years, most of these wonderful people will be gone, please don't forget what they have done.  Thank you Uncle John  Mike CT.

 

You are correct.  That was the original intent of Decoration/Memorial Day.  In fact it was to recognize and honor the men & women that died in the Civil War.

 

But things have changed in this country, especially over the last 25-30 years.  PC now dominates our society.  Everybody wins a trophy, schools are dumbed-down, and the police are the bad guys.  Not all changes have been for the better. 

 

However, I think that we should ALL take every opportunity we get to THANK OUR VETS.

Part of the dinner discussion Saturday evening was civil war related.  Uncle John's care taker mentioned Gettysburg, We talked briefly about the recent removal of trees from the battle field to make the area look like 1863.  Side note was that a lot of young people know nothing about Gettysburg.  I also mention Antietam, Dianne, (wife) and I recently toured the national historic site there. High school history always fascinated me that the corn field was gone by the end of the day.  Monumental blood shed. Most American casualties in one day ever, and the creek ran red with blood for three days.  There is a lot to remember, as we take so much for granted.   Antietam, Sharpsburg, Maryland. 

On this Day I always think of the many Military Cemeteries and their heroes which I visited over time while on business trips in Europe where over 100,000 of our World War I and II veterans are buried. Along with Arlington, Gettysburg, Salisbury[NC] and dozens of others in the U.S., I never fail to experience the chill of pride as I walk the rows of markers.

 

Today is to honor and appreciate those who died for our Country.
