Alex,

It seems we are traveling parallel paths. I too started to dismantle my layout right after a magazine and video feature. Had a sump issue a while back which got the basement carpet damp so I decided to tear it all out and start over. Total update of the layout room..new wall to wall carpet.. track lighting to go with the recessed cans.. about another 100' of RailRax to put up...

Now I can follow you for inspiration... it's pretty exciting!

Alex, you and me both, my friend!  I'm still in the middle of repacking my trains for my rebuild to make the layout more accessible without losing layout square footage.  It's like a puzzle, I have to move 5 things to get to one area to change, but I'm getting close to the minor deconstruction.

I'm glad I got some video of your layout this summer.  Good luck with the rebuild, I'm sure it will be magnificent!

(Oh, at one time I looked like your daughter's boyfriend, before I got married!)

I am glad I got to see your layout last summer, visiting it brought back a lot of memories of your videos train trips on your layout. You have more will power than me, I just don'the seem to have the will power to do what needs to be done in the basement and start a new layout. Some of the reson is the $$$ it takes plus I am looking at retirement in X years and a move at that time. I hold the dream layout in my mind for then. Please be like Elliot and keep us in the loop as you go along we can learn a lot from you as you progress to your next GREAT layout. Gee when we talked at trainstock you said about seeing each other again this summer I wasn'the sure about coming up, but now, hum.                                                                                                                                                                                     Looks like you have alot of riders riding along on your rebuild train, I guess we are in for a wild ride. I hear the all aboard being called and we are climbing aboard for the ride!                                 We are ready for the ride.

Allan & Alex, count me in as one who would really appreciate and enjoy a "things I learned" series of articles in OGR!  I will be starting to build my first good-sized layout (almost identical sized space as Alex has to work with) later this year and would like to avoid as many first-time mistakes as possible!  Alex, I hope you will consider doing it despite the extra work it would put on your plate!

YEP, I can remember when I looked like your daughter's boyfriend...oh wait,  I was daydreaming again.  Is he the third member of the Hans and Franz team...Yanz?  He will pump YOU up!!!

I really liked your old layout.  I'm surprised it was only as big as you said it was, it looked much bigger to me.  Good luck with your new layout.  Keep us posted with lots o pics.

Alex,

With help like that doing the bull work is just a finger point away. Awesome job that kid is doing for you. You are very lucky to have that help.

As far as the layout goes I'm very happy for you that you are starting over. I know how much trouble you were having with everything. You will come out on top with an even nicer layout than you had. I'm so looking forward to seeing it as it progresses.

Good luck pal. I'll come over and help whenever you want.

You guys are great, this is what i love about this forum. Sometimes i think, should i have taken on this huge task, the answer is YES when you hear all the positive and encouraging comments.

Alan, that sounds great, just let me know. Also Dina says hi.

RICKC, Yes he's extremely powerful. He's a kick boxer and a cage fighter. He makes things so easy for me. Except when i kid around fight with him, then it's not easy. LOL LOL

Once again thank you all for the great comments and input, I will continue to post progress photos as we go along.

Thanks,

ALEX,

Alex,

I had the misfortune of not seeing your former layout in person, but  I can assure that such will not be the case in the future. I told Judy about your project, and without hesitation, she said, "Well, he is still young so he will have no problem getting it done. And this time we will definitely go visit them."

Good luck, my friend, and hope to see you 'soon'.

Alex

WOW, first wgb pete then scrapiron now you. At least you aren't going on3. Happy building.  I immensely enjoy watching layouts being built. They are all so different. I even learn a few things. I wish an other priority didn't keep me from working on mine.  Reading the forum is a great distraction while sitting at the UMH.

Dan

Alex,

46 inches-guess you are cutting 2x4 by 8 footers in half and taking 2 inches off each or just buy 2x4 by 7 footers and cut them in half for 42 inch height. That is what I did and have the layout at 42 inches height. Enough rrom to store stuff and to get under it.

So... are you making room for the real subway to come through?

As long as the layout is done for August, we can still party!

Whew!  You had me worried!

I'm betting this will be a fantastic new layout judging from the great one you had before the demolition.

John,  It will be a nice layout, but a much simpler track plan and you will be able to view trains from all area's on the table. It will be a bit smaller than my other layout, there will be much more hangout room for visitors.

Thanks

Alex
