Who among us are going on this trip? Last year we had 415 riders and the trip was sold out. This year so far there are fewer so far maybe because it is toward the end of the month and some of us had already planned a late Summer vacation. This trip is using both former BMT Standards (1915) and Tri-plex cars (1925) coupled up to make either a 6 or 9 car train and we are headed for Rockaway this time. Let me know if you or someone you know is going. I know some from the ERA who are going.

Hi Ed, I'm going .  Met you there  last year on the tri-plex run. See you Saturday, Vic.

Hi Vic:

Yes I met you on the line that morning. It was drizzling rain. We met two girls while on line waiting to board the train. I was telling them about the cars that we were riding on and answering their questions. We had lunch at Nathan's. I plan to take the 7:30am Metro-North New Haven Line train out of Larchmont. It should get me into GCT at 8:14. Then take the #4 train to Brooklyn Borough Hall and get there around 8:45 and then walk to the museum.  I will be wearing my Tom's Trains black hat. It should be a good day riding the BMT Standards and Tri-plex cars coupled together as a single train. The train will consist of the 3 standards with either 3 or 6 of the tri-plex cars depending on how many rides they sell. I plan to bring lunch as I did the last time I was on a subway trip to Rockaway since I remember that the food places there were not very interesting. You might want to do the same. See you Saturday.

Ed

Received the newsletter from the NYC Transit Museum yesterday with the details of the subway ride this Saturday. Should be nice being onboard this great vintage equipment from 1915-1918 and 1925-1927. This is the first time the Standards and the Tri-plex cars will be coupled together for an all day trip like this. In June they ran coupled together from Brighton Beach to the Kings Highway stations as a two day test for a longer outing. What other transit agency in the western hemisphere has saved their older equipment? Chicago has to borrow there's from private museums and Philadelphia has had none saved. There is a Philadelphia and Western Bullet Car saved. How about Boston? I believe that's it.

To Vic:

If you read this today I was just looking at the Trip Advisor map of places to eat along 116th St near the train station where we are going tomorrow. I had mentioned that I am planning to bring lunch from home because I don't remember there being any good food places for lunch however according to Trip Advisor there are several places that could be ok for lunch. If you are planning to bring lunch with you that's fine. I will and if you and my friend Frank who will be joining us and is not bring lunch want to check out places for lunch that's ok too.  See you tomorrow morning on the line at the museum.

Hi Ed, I'm not bringing lunch. If there isn't a good place to eat it wouldn't hurt me to skip a meal ! See you tomorrow Vic.

Hi Ben:

Thanks for the suggestions for lunch. The 3 of us had lunch at the diner/restaurant on the same block that the station is on. The subway trip was great. The train operated as good as new thanks to Bill Wall and all the other guys who keeps the cars in operating condition. There were some guys on the train who came in from Chicago for the ride. Bill told me that the Chicago CTA wants him to come to Chicago and help them set up a similar program but any older equipment has to trucked in from museums outside of Chicago. Hope to see you soon at the club.

The Transit Museum runs these trips periodically, particularly during the warm weather months. At this point, I believe the next outing for the vintage equipment will be operation over select revenue routes during the holiday season. The museum is also hosting the 23rd annual Bus Festival featuring some of its antique vehicle collection in Brooklyn tomorrow.
