Hi guys, I figured I'd start up a 'project' thread on my lionel traditional autorack train. The main project idea is covered on my into page at: https://ogrforum.ogaugerr.com/t...65#63513879844943265

But here's an excerpt from it to save you some clicking:

While browsing ebay I saw one of those wonderful traditional Lionel auto racks that I love and remembered my childhood dream of collecting a massive train of them. I picked it up and hope I can find some more in the future, the current vision is two traditional Lionel GP38's, one in NS horse head paint and the other in the NS Eco scheme (the one from the starter set) and as many autoracks as I can get my hands on, but for now the one will do. In my N scale expenditures I've been collecting unit trains that I don't have the space to run (started with genius me picking up 32 roadrailers when I have a 4x8 layout and a couple of modules) so I'll be joining a club and the one I've selected has a focus of Traditional O with a few other scales present so I figured it might be a great opportunity to bust out the older O scale trains (and my future autorack train) and get some run time on them in addition to getting the N stuff moving. O scale trackage wise I've got a 10'x12' loop of O-27 around the top of my room that hasn't been touched in a decade (actually  now that I think about it I chucked a K-line MP-15DC up there a few years ago, been sitting since). I've got three or four large bins stuffed with O-27, I'm going to need a bigger radius of the O-27 styled track for the auto racks I know... that is if Lionel even makes the stuff anymore.

Since the writing of that post life got sorta screwy and joining the club isnt possible but I'm continuing to pick up racks here and there (when I can get them cheap enough to conform to my new lifestyle) in hopes my life will get back on track but here's an update:

I've gotten two autoracks since the first one, a DGRW and an SP... the SP was suppose to be new but that was not the case, one hinge on each of two of the doors were busted. My plan is drilling into the door and replacing the missing pins with brass rod (with rounded tips to hopefully save as much paint as possible). I've also tested them on 0-27 curves, they work so the club might not be necessary to run a decent train. I also got them behind the mp-15, they look pretty darn good.

Intermodalman, Brasseur electric trains has doors for those autoracks in their parts inventory.  They have several colors.  i recently bought a set of doors and ladders for a blue Dodge motor sports autorack I had picked up some time ago.  When I went to install the new doors I found the originals in a small plastic bag in the car on the top deck.  i could have sworn I looked there when i bought it but either didn't look or somehow just missed them.

I do like those cars , the waffle side boxcar series and the bulkhead lumber flat that was done around the same time. The last of the real traditional non scale new offerings I think.

I have a bunch of 1/64 cars on my open racks. There was a die cast car series called Fresh Cherries about 10 years ago that had AMC Pacers and Gremlins in a few color schemes as well as a bunch of other more normal -non sports cars like Mavericks and Mustang 2s. There was even some Chevelles all in multiple colors. They look really good but they have to run a bit slow because they can tip on tight turns.

Silver Lake, how did you attach those 1/64 cars to the open autoracks?  I had picked up 10-12 Hot Wheels VWs a probably about 1/50 scale that fit inside.  Tried using wax made to hold candles in place.  It worked well when car was upright on the  tracks but didn't hold so well when the car was put away in it's box.  The VWs also made the three level car very top heavy.
