I don't think Lee has had a chance to jump in this year and remind everyone about this annual event. The Edgerton Model Railroad Club in Rochester, NY is holding the last of their 2014 open houses this week.

The layouts will be open from 11:00 AM to 2:00 PM on 12/29, 12/30 and 12/31.

The 4 layouts were originally built by the City of Rochester and the Rochester PAL with assistance from Lionel Corp. in 1950. The layouts depict the 4 seasons with 3 of them depicting scenes reminiscent of the Rochester area and a whimsical winter scene. There are a combination of vintage and current locomotives and rolling stock, accessories for visitors to operate, and displays of vintage model and toy train items along with items of local interest.

Admission is free, donations gladly accepted to support the continued operation and maintenance of the layouts.

These layouts have been featured in national publications and videos and most famously in the Bantam Books of the 1950's and 1960's "Model Railroading" in the chapter "Model Railroading" As A Civic Project. The layouts are under continuous improvement & updating, for example a recent upgrade to current production improved GarGraves switches thanks to a donation from the Roders at GarGraves Trackage Corp.

The layouts are located at the Edgerton Recreation Center, 41 Backus St, Rochester, NY 14608. For more information and videos of our layouts, visit their website at www.edgertonmodelrailroadclub.com.

Here are a few of my videos of these layouts:

The Rochester, NY classic O gauge model railroad was built in the mid 1950's as a community project. Organizations like the Rochester PAL, the Rochester Art Club, Boy Scout, Lionel, Rochester City and even the New York Central Railroad all had a hand in building it. Over the years the layout has been altered considerably but the core of the old layout still remains. Along with Roadside America and the NY Society of Model Engineers layouts, it is one of the few layouts of historical significance, built in the golden era of Lionel that has not been taken down and parted out.  Good to hear that Edgerton club is now the caretaker.
