The distance from the west coast to the York Meet is a valid reason for it being difficult to attend.  However, your whole family is able to attend if you bring them.  Family of TCA members are admitted free to the York Meet.

The York Meet was created by and for like minded people who love the model train hobby to buy, trade and sell trains.  It has grown into not just for collectors but for operators too.  Many women and children attend all TCA events.  As far as growing the hobby, it's not any different than any other public train show.  People go, walk around, marvel at the offerings, buy stuff, sell stuff and go home happy.  They can attend seminars by the manufacturers, see operating layouts and displays, and in some cases meet the owners or representatives of the big train companies.  Not to mention the many offsite model train activities around the area as mentioned many times here.  Just check out the York Primer thread in the above Featured Topics section at the top of this forum.  I personally think the York Meet is head and shoulders above any local or public train show I've ever attended.

But because of being part of a membership, along with the added bonus of meeting up with OGR Forum members, the friends you make adds a lot to the experience.  The photo Dave posted is repeated all over the complex!

I knew you fellows would come up with something!  The most common complaint - food!  Not bad.

For me, my worst complaint is living in Arizona, getting to York is not an annual thing.  Made it this spring, but with the TCA convention in New York next year, it looks like 2016 will be my next York trip.  Oh, well, I can go vicariously through all of your comments (and complaints? actually I do get a kick out of them)

If your kids are members of the TCA kids club, when they turn 18, their full member dues are 1/2 price for several years. I believe the Kids Club is free.

You have to know to ask for the discount. The TCA bills membership renewals at the full rate.

The discount is documented on page 13 of the TCA's rules and regulations document.

The discount is good until the year the individual turns 24.

OK..here are my complaints...

just when I get used to Fridays on/at Thursdays,  the dang thing is changed to Thursdays at Tuesdays......

The world is oriented mostly for the right handed

You shouldn't pull on Supermans' cape

i tried stepping on the arrows and turning them in the opposite direction......no go

Crop dusting at York is a given

The food at York is atrocious and expensive for its quality.  There are the usual trucks that sell what some people may characterize as food.  I don't.  There are some permanent vendors in the buildings that serve the usual hot dog/burger/french fry/ sodas fare.  The same exists outside at one location.  Bring a lunch and leave it your car, you'll be glad you did.  Parking is a short walk and is probably not more walking than you'll do inside all the buildings.  There are places to eat outside of the fair grounds, but that is inconvenient and you might lose your previous parking spot upon your return.  For me, I took a light lunch and after walking around all day, I was pretty hungry.  Upon leaving, I went to a restaurant and had a good meal.  Also I didn't take a chance of getting sick from anything consumed at the site which could have ruined my entire afternoon.  Bona Appetit!!!
