MTH TIU trips my MTH Z4000 when power is applied.  This unit has never been used to run trains, software upgraded to 4.20 in 2009 & 4.3  in 2015.  Bought in 2004 from a now closed local train shop to use in the future.  I am now in process of building a layout, got the TIU out to test.  Hooked it to a Lionel ZW-L also and as soon as you apply power the breaker trips which I assume is indicating a short in the TIU.  Would the TIU allow software upgrades to be installed if it were defective out of the box new, or during the sw updates, could the update process have caused this problem??  Wires connected correctly. Both transformers also new and work to run trains.  Any suggestions on anything I can do to correct the issue OR would it be worthwhile to contact MTH service OR should I bite the bullet and purchase a new one? Do the newer TIUs have different connector for the Wi-Fi unit?   Thank you for any help??

Craig,

Would the TIU allow software upgrades to be installed if it were defective out of the box new,

Yes, it would.

or during the sw updates, could the update process have caused this problem??

Highly unlikely, unless it was very roughly handled.

Wires connected correctly. Both transformers also new and work to run trains.

If you connect the transformer to the TIU's Fixed Channel #1 Input  but do not connect anything to the TIU's Fixed Channel #1 Output, does it still trip the breaker?

Yes, breaker trips with two wires from transformer to TIU input 1 (black to black, red to red) no wires hooked on output side.

Craig,

Stop troubleshooting and get it to MTH for repair.

Next time, don't wait 12 years before you check to make sure that a new purchase actually works.

Thank you Barry.  Your point about waiting 12 years is correct.  I've been buying items thru the years for the layout I am presently building may have more surprises awaiting me.  I take I should have MTH repair vice buying a new TIU?

That depends.

There's a sticker on the bottom of the TIU that may have a "Rev" followed by a letter and, pehaps, a number. What is it?

Barry, only thing on the bottom is "M.T.H. ELECTRIC TRAINS   PATENT PENDING  CONTAINS FCC ID: OT8RFMT".  Am I better off buying new one cost wise vice repair expense and will have any later features in any way, such as wi-fi hookup etc?   Assume my remote will operate with newer TIU?   Thank you for your input.  Greatly appreciate.

Craig,

No Rev. ID indicates that your TIU is an original, Rev. G. Every TIU since is far more robust than was the Rev. G. The latest TIU, the Rev. L, is also far superior to all previous TIUs.

If you're actually going to use it soon, I'd purchase a new  (not used) Rev. L TIU, only from an authorized MTH dealer (otherwise, there's no warranty).

Barry,  thank you very much for your expert input.   I was leaning toward purchasing a new one.  I purchased the set, TIU & remote.  Assume remote is fine to use with new TIU or were the remotes improved also?  Again than you.
