had to send an brand new legacy powered F3B back to the new service center; defective shell and shorting.  when it came back, about a week, one of the repairs noted as being done was replacing the traction tires.  the thing had 10 seconds of run time.  what??

 

have a second powered B from the same road (really wanted power).  when i put the repaired unit back on the tracks i tested the MU.  the second B began to act up, including shorting.  took it up and turned it over and the traction tires were disintegrating.  again, minimal runtime...minutes.

 

is there any smoke about a batch of bad tires?  am reluctant to replace with the extras that came with the engine as they might be bad also.

 

could this condition cause the short? (I can't think of any way.)

 

will call L tomorrow, but would appreciate any thoughts.

 

have never had a tire go bad before.

They probably replaced the traction tires because they were the original batch that were way too thick. They wouldn't have caused the short unless they were rubbing on the brakeshoes causing the motor to overheat and burn up something inside. Many people experienced problems with those Legacy F units because of those super thick tires.

Very common.  The proper fix is to replace your Lionel tires with the MTH tires.  The MTH fits in the groove perfectly.   I see this every week.  When I got my JC F set, I looked at the oversized tires that weje jamming in the sideframes and cut them off then replaced them with the better tires.

 

This is not a bash on Lionel but the proper fix to solve your issue.

Marty has it.  I've laid in a large supply of MTH tires and whenever I need to replace the Lionel tires, they get MTH tires.  Almost without exception the MTH tires are thinner, and don't hit the imitation brake shoes.  I'm am a bit surprised the Lionel locomotives get out with tires that are already rubbing on the brake shoes, not sure how that happens.

Lionel already LOST their quality control years ago as for one that I just purchased a starter set FT # 6-38253 (southern pacific) few weeks ago and taking out of the box for the first time I found out the front motor truck was almost jammed (very hard for the motor to turn) and the rear motor truck's one geared side wheel flange was cracked. This engine had THICK traction tires too.  I test it on short piece of track using my Z4000, 2 days later I pack right back in the box and spend 14 dollars to ship it back. The total of shipping was 32 dollars !!! I am DONE buying NEW lionel locomotives except new freight cars are ok but much more expensive. I will stick with Lionel made before the move to china 2000 and before or postwar. I had enough of this, even MTH has their share of problems too.

Maybe for you, but certainly not me.  I entered an order over the weekend and finalized it.  It's still sitting in the queue to be processed.  From previous experience, I expect it'll be there for at least another week.  Then it disappears and about two-three weeks later we get the parts. 

 

I recently ordered a motor from Lionel, three days later I had it.
