"Train and Locomotives" airs "The Magnificent GG-1: The World's Most Famous Electric Locomotive" Monday and Tuesday

Just yesterday I took my train-loving daughter to the B&O Museum. As always, we rode the "first mile" excursion train where I saw the rusting hulk of a GG-1 on a spur. It will take a LOT of work to get that one display worthy but hopefully it will happen.

 

 

As an aside, it was also the 150th anniversary of the Lincoln funeral train stopping in Baltimore so they had a fitting reenactment of that solemn event.  

  

 

Thanks Carl for the reminder. Loved last weeks show featuring the 1225. It was a treat to see both the 1225 & 765 working together.

I came late to appreciate the GG-1.  It was seeing them on an earlier "Trains and Locomotive" program featuring the PRR that the GG-1's were shown at the Army-Navy game particularly that gave me an appreciation for their size and sleek looks.

Just set it to record.. other than" Trains and Locomotives" and TM's "I Love Toy Trains" is there anything else on RFD worth watching. I have to pay extra to Direct TV  for this channel and I'm hoping to get more for my money...

Depends if you are into farming or ranching, Rich. If you are thinking of a new John Deere as a primary mover, it might be worth it. 

 

When I lived in the Chicagoland area, I had Direct TV though cable was readily available. Where we live now, this is are only option, though a good one.

I watched it live tonight because of the my GG-1 interest and really enjoyed it.  Usually I watch them a few days later from the DVR.

Love the GG1.  Even though I have seen this before, I had to watch.

It answers a couple of questions I've seen in the Forum such as what the bell and horn sounded like.  It also makes you wonder why, if there are so many recordings, was no one able to get the sound files right?  The horn and bell are ok but the rest of the sounds might as well be an electric fan.  The same sounds are used in every electric locomotive.  In the real world the EP5's were nicknamed "Jets" for a reason also they were originally equipped with a Hancock chime whistle not a Leslie A200.

It was a great program the GG1's are a huge part of Pennsy history.

I particularly enjoyed the scenes from Metuchen, Metro Park, New Brunswick, etc. since I grew up in that area.  Regrettably, I never went to those stations to see the great GG-1.  As an adult w/ wife and kids, we'd use Metro Park for trips into NYC during visits with my parents; but, this was long after the GG-1 had been retired.

If I decide to plant my back yard I'll keep that in mind Brian..  from what I hear John Deere is the Rolls Royce of the tractor set.

Maybe you could use one to push around all that snow you get up there..
