I tried upgrading my DCS for the first time.  All went according to instructions online and in Barry's book with the TIU upgrade.  I cycled the power then started the remote upgrade, following the instructions for it.  When I select the file for the remote, after it tries to run, I get an error message that it can't find the TIU.  This happens after retrying, restarting the upgrade, and even cycling the power.  I noticed that it didn't tell me what to do with the mini to mini cable.  Looking back in Barry's book I see where it said to remove it before cycling power.  That is one thing I did wrong.  So it still can't find the TIU when doing the remote upgrade.  I have not tried connecting to the layout or powering the remote, since I don't know what state it is in now.

I did not find this issue addressed in Barry's book, but must admit, I may have overlooked it.  Can anyone offer any suggestions On how to remedy this situation?

Gregg, Barry, and Marty,

Thank you so much for the advice.  I restarted the computer, then did the upgrade to the TIU.  At the end of that upgrade, I saw where it told me to unplug the mini to mini and cycle power.  Overlooking the message to unplug the mini was my downfall.  I was then able to upgrade the remote successfully.  I wondered if I could run the upgrade to the TIU without harming anything, but wanted to be sure since I never did it before.  Working in Electronics for over 38 years, I have seen devices that are unforgiving, but must admit most were in the earlier days of processor based devices.

Many thanks to you fellows for answering the same questions over and over to folks who are new to DCS, and are afraid to do something that will cause the need to send the unit in for professional repair!!

Oh, yes, here is the proof of the pudding.  The display shows 4.3, and I was able to run my Hudson right off the bat.

It cannot be overemphasized:  Start the computer program and select the function you want to perform, before doing powering up anything with the remote or TIU.  Then follow the on-screen instructions exactly, and in the order given.  If you err or there is a problem, shut down the TIU and remote completely and restart from scratch.
