Brad, I may be joining you on this project.  I have been reading and rereading the 4 x 8 plan and instructions and am considering it for a winter project after I take down the Christmas village.  While I have built larger layouts over the years, and plan to build another in a 12 x 12 room once our last grown daughter moves away from home, I want to get something more than just an oval of track going.  I agree with Matt, that I am not much for 4 x 8s, but the track plan looks interesting for that size layout.

I am getting scheduled for surgeries in January and February to have scar tissue from carpal tunnel surgery 20 years ago removed, and have some degenerative cartilage removed from my wrists.  I have a good bit of the Fastrack minus the switches now.  Having recovered from similar surgery before, the construction on a foam board would be something I think I could handle while I recuperate.

Brad and anyone else who may be considering building a variation of this plan, please keep us posted here.

You could use the loops as a passing siding. Set the rolling stock on one loop, run the locomotive around to the back end and grab the caboose to move it out of the way. Rejoin the locomotive to the back end of the rolling stock and then chase down the caboose. If you are running double headed diesels, one facing each direction, no one will ever know! If you have one steamer, enjoy running it in reverse!
