Gary,

Why don't you start a thread for the 844 information and we can leave this one specifically for the 4014?

I updated the thread title to better represent the content of the thread.

It's hard to believe based on some of the posts in this thread but it appears that 844 made the trip without any problems. I scanned all the posts on Trainorders and couldn't find much of anything - nada - except whining about the photos with Ed hanging out the window. Most of the better posts and photos were not on the steam forum but on the western railroad forum to avoid the negativity. Congrats to the UP Steam crew.

Remember the UP Steam Shop will be open for tours Fridays in November 2016 and Saturdays January 2017 through March 2017. Money goes to support the Cheyenne trolley and railroad museum. Link below for more info.

December 1944                       UP RECEIVES ITS LAST NEW STEAM LOCOMOTIVE

Steam Locomotive No. 844 was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific. A high-speed passenger engine, it pulled such widely known trains as the Overland Limited, Los Angeles Limited, Portland Rose and Challenger. When diesels took over all of the passenger train duties, No. 844 was placed in freight service in Nebraska between 1957 and 1959. It was saved from being scrapped in 1960 and held for special service. Hailed as UP’s “Living Legend,” the engine is known for its excursion runs, especially over Sherman Hill between Cheyenne and Laramie, Wyo.

No. 844, shown in Council Bluffs, Iowa, was the last steam locomotive built for Union Pacific. Never retired, it remains in special service today as part of the railroad’s heritage program.
