I was working under the layout yesterday on a rainy day wiring a new water tower. A horn blew in the driveway and I scurried down the stairs to see the UPS truck parked next to the barn. This is unusual as the Brown truck guy normally drives up to the house. Out of the truck steps a lovely lady and asked if I live here (the barn). I said no, it is for our train layout. She stopped in her tracks and said "trains, my 10 year old son loves trains". She went on to say, "where would you like this box?". It was a big one containing the new Harry Heike large version of the GCT base and I said if you will let me help you with this box and take it upstairs, I will show you our layout. She said of course, "I will take it upstairs for you, no problem".

When she got to the top of the stairs, it just blew her mind. She had a wonderful time taking photos and watching the trains run. She asked if she could bring her son to see the layout and I said of course. We are having train friends over on the 11th so we have 3 new guests that day. She also asked if I had a UPS truck on the layout and I said no. Her comment was I will in another week.

What a wonderful representative of UPS. Polite, helpful, and someone who also loves trains.

Spence, you have company being a great ambassador for UPS.

My experience as well both at home and at the studio.  I've never had a problem with UPS or FEDEX.

Our UPS driver Ray would always leave our dogs Milk Bones when he delivered packages. Both would "get happy" whenever they heard the Big Brown Truck pull into the driveway. Ray finally got to meet our Lab Bosch about a week before Bosch died. Bosch greeted him like an old friend.

FedEx, USPS, et al; dogs would go berserk and sound off like they're going to chew their way through the front door to get to the delivery guy.

They say dogs are a good judge of character....

Wow where did she find the time to do that I am a ups driver and I have only a few minutes per house. I wish I had the time to wAtch a train layout while I am at work. I work 845 to 800 at night with a 1 hr lunch and the rest of the time I work.

I've gotten a LOT of stuff "in the mail" over the last 25 years - mostly heavy, often high-dollar, relatively delicate things (in other words, O-scale trains) and almost (not quite all) of them have shown up in fine condition, and half of those that didn't (again, a small portion) could have their problems immediately traced back to the shipper's poor packing.

These have come by all the major shipping companies - but primarily USPS (mostly, now)

and UPS (mostly until a few years ago). I have never had to file a claim. I hope that I never do (but, I don't buy much any more).

Some of these outfits and their people mess up (we've all seen the videos and gotten the gouged big brown package), but primarily they are people attempting to do a decent job.

Just like most of us do, or did.

(Now, just watch my next Big Brown Package - there's bound to be one more, eventually -

wind up on my porch looking and sounding like it's been used as a pinata. I shouldn't have said anything.)

Things like that happen to me all the time, not with delivery drivers but with termite inspectors, A/C techs, and various other workers who come inside the house. Many of them have kids and they light up when I tell them there's a Toy Train Museum in Tucson. I've passed out a lot of museum map/schedule flyers to guys who come to do work around my house.

I also sometimes stop at the farmers' market on my way to Sunday open houses at the museum. People notice I'm wearing a toy train museum logo shirt and ask me about it. I'm always happy to oblige.
