I have a question for those that have and use a PowerMaster Bridge.  Some background, I'm building a near ceiling shelf loop in my bedroom, with plans to run it through most of the house as time goes on.  I want to be able to run any type of locomotive conventionally.  This means I have to use the older PowerMasters because if I use the new ones, TMCC/Legacy locomotives would see the command signal and not run in conventional mode if I used Legacy PowerMasters as they require a command base, and I don't want to tie my command base up for this as it's for the future layout in the back room.  I have a couple Cab-1 remotes and found 3 PowerMasters new online, so this is so far panning out as planned.

Now, I have seen several push button controls for trains and other wireless control/automation things happening.  This has lead to to start thinking, yes a dangerous thing.  What if instead of keeping track of a Cab-1 remote I could put buttons on the wall in the room to control things, but how do I get a signal to the PowerMasters?

Okay, time for the question.  The PowerMaster Bridge connects to the Cab-2 base via the serial port.  I know you can connect the Cab-1/2 base's serial port to a computer and issue command that way.  Can I connect the Bridge to a computer via the serial port and issue commands to the PowerMasters that way?  The complete though is in each room I could connect a button panel to a micro computer like the Raspberry Pi, and then that to the Bridge.  Now I can use the buttons to control track voltage when in the room, and when running trains between rooms I can use the Cab-1 to follow the train.

So, has anyone sent commands to the Bridge via direct connection to a computer, or does it have to go through a command base first?

Just power up the track/loco before you power up the Base for conventional operation.

I thought you had 3 TMCC Powermasters, not Legacy Powermasters, which is why you were going to talk to them with a Bridge and use the Bridge's 9-pin serial port for your microcontroller controls.  No Base, no Track signal.

(By the way, there is a typo in the Legacy Powermaster manual stating the track signal is 455 MHz, not KHz!)

That is correct, and before I buy a Bridge I was trying to find out if it's possible.

The Legacy base sends the TMCC commands to the PowerMaster Bridge to be forwarded to the PowerMasters directly on the 27mhz signal.

I'm not 100% sure if they use the TMCC or Legacy protocol to actually talk to the PM Bridge.  If they use 8-bit TMCC, those commands are documented in the Lionel Literature on TMCC, Lionel - Complete Guide to Command Control 71-2911-250.  I will point out that even if it's TMCC, there's a significant amount of programming to talk to the serial interface and implement a complete remote control system.

I am pretty sure I have run my Bridges from TMCC without problems.

If Sinclair needs info to get started with the programming, I can send him a copy of a multi-part article about computer interfacing that was printed in the TTOS Bulletin several years ago.  It is using BASIC for the programming, but it got me up and running.

BTW, if anyone needs a Bridge, I have an new extra unit for sale.  Santa was too good to me, and I wound up with duplicate gifts.

Yes, I would like to have that information to look at.  As for programming, my dad is a software engineer, so if I get stuck I'm pretty sure he can help me on that.  I just want to move the button pushing from the Cab-1 in my hand to a panel on the wall.  Sure, I could bolt my Cab-1 to the wall for the same effect, but I need it for my trains in the other room.  But I guess if someone has an unused Cab-1 or one with a broken case but the PCBA still works, I'd take that.
