I have been collecting USTTC trains for quite a while and have been finding it hard to find the passenger cars as well as certain locomotives. Through out the years I have learned quite a bit about the company as well as those associated with it. If anyone out there needs information I will be glad to share my knowledge with you. I am constantly looking for USTTC items for sale.

Steve,

I think I have all the freights, quite a few I never knew existed. I have 12 power units. I am trying to find the Diner, Michigan and the notorious Ontario. I have no idea why it is so hard to find as they produced equal amounts. I have yet to see the army locomotives, the Brookside Wine locomotive and the Eel River. Searching is a real challenge, but very rewarding when you find something new.

Hi Charlie.  I might have, but I'm in the middle of a move and everything is packed up and in storage.  Anything I would have surplus would be pretty common.  Robin

Hi Robin, I hope all goes well with your move. After you get settled in and unpacked, please let me know what items you would be willing to part with. Also. I have a USTTC Bart Set A-B-B-A with original boxes listed under items for sale. Do you know of anyone who might be interested?  Thank you and best wishes.   Charlie

Thanks, Charlie.  May be a while before my USTTC comes out of boxes, but I'll keep you in mind.  The BART set is a nice item.  I have owned two of them, but traded one for the TTCS train set done by USTTC a year or so ago.  I also have a Metro set.  Great runners and even better shelf items.  There was a 4 car BART set on eBay a few weeks ago.  It sold for $750.  Might be your best bet to go that route.  Robin

They made some interesting items, rarely heard of now ... ?

United States Toy Train Company

(Del Mar, California, USA)

Tom Stephenson was the owner of TESA Design, a company that specialised in transportation design for such clients as Amtrack, Pullman Standard and various regional transit authorities. He launched USTTC in the early 1970s, with first production being in 1974, the philosophy of the company being tinplate trains that would operate on 0 or 027 track, but new designs, not reproductions. The first product was a series of boxcars, the US Army loco, various other locos as kit or ready to run, and the BART streamliner, followed by the Washingtom Metro set and 555 Interurban.

The BART sets comprise a three car unit powered by the ever reliable Marx double reduction motor, USTTC having purchased all remaining stock of Marx motors when then Marx owner Quaker exited the toy train business. Around 200 BART units were produced, the three piece set being powered A with unpowered B and A units. Additional B units were produced to create longer trains.

Tom Stephenson passed away in 1989 and, with him, USTTC.

I have the TTCS loco and all the cars except the boxcar from 1984. If anyone has a boxcar to sell, let me know.

I have a BART power car and some empty shells waiting to be finished into a train. I got them from Butch and Dick so for all I know they might be the prototypes. The power unit on the BART is Marx and the trailing truck is American Flyer.

What parts do you need to complete this set?    Charlie

I have the power unit complete and the other cars are just the unfinished metal extrusions. I will eventually make some metal floors and add American flyer trucks. The end is a bit more tricky on the power car the nose end is cast epoxy and the other side is metal cut to fit the extrusion.

As you see this was a pretty smart design with channels for both the floor and the plastic window strips. The floor is also mounted very high so the cars ride very low to the track even with the Am Flyer trucks

The shells have no markings at all on them. As you can see at the top one of the three I have was tooled to have a drive unit and the other two were trailers.

I was going to cast some new ends for this set from the finished power car end for these and another unfinished shells set Butch A. (who gave these to me) had but then he passed and that idea went down in the project pile.

I have also considered making this set of three shells into a Talgo train like maybe a New Haven Daniel Webster to run with those Lionel checkerboard F3s sandwiching the cars.
