Before the High Line, New York Central had a railroad running down the West side which pretty much ran in New York City;s streets south of 60 th street. The Southern most point on this line was a freight warehouse and terminal known as Hudson Terminal. It was in existence prior to the Hudson Tubes station and development at Cortlandt street. which they called Hudson Terminal. New York Central's Hudson Terminal was on Hudson Street and Beach street about 4-5 blocks north of the Hudson Tubes station. Its site is where the South tube of the Holland Tunnel exits and feeds an S loop roadway which feeds traffic into local New York City streets.

Here is a photo of the terminal in its heyday.

There was lots of street running and plenty of traffic jams

Sometimess cars were unloaded and loaded in the street with portable ramps and platforms.

The railroad turned south from Canal street on Hudson Street to reach the terminal. Looks like a little steam on the street here. Can you imagine doing this in todays traffic congestion.

A real early view. Horse drawn Vehicles on the street and I think that may be a gasslight in the foreground, perhaps maybe electrified at this point or maybe not. Check the building Facade and we see a statue of a Vanderbilt looking down on the activity.

The Hudson Terminal was an active railroad facility for the central into the 1930s. Even though the High Line was in service, there were still street operations for several years after. The terminal was closed and demolished in 1935. This view shows the start of demolition.

Not sure of the location but given the outside 3rd Rail I would assume near the City.

These taken in or around Rochester, NY. At the far left behind the boxcars sits a freight station that later housed the Despatch Junction Train store which burned down about three years ago. It has since returned.

This crossing is just a few miles from my house.

That same crossing today. The signal bridge has been moved back but still stands.
