Yesterday I had the pleasure of being asked to show my layout to my wife's ladies Bible study group.  I have seen a number of comments on the forum about how rude or what stupid questions visitors can ask.  Or maybe they let their young children run wild.

I know this is not your normal group, but they were all women, none of them were train fans or even married to train fans.  They had just had heard about my layout from mutual friends and wanted to see it.  They stayed for an hour and asked a lot of questions.

  • How long have you loved trains?
  • What was your inspiration for what you have modeled?
  • Did you build the buildings from scratch or were they pre-built?
  • How often do you run your trains?
  • How long has it taken you to build all this?
  • Do your son and grandsons enjoy it?

When I explained that many of the scenes are based on special memories, they thought that was really fascinating.  They loved that it was my attempt to create in miniature the scenes where I met my wife, bought my first train set and bicycle, went to the movies as a boy, and etc.  They knew of people that had train sets as kids and quickly tired of watching the train run around and around in circles.  But this was really fascinating to them.  Many asked to bring their husbands and family back to see it.  I don't know who had more fun, them or me.  Maybe it was equal, a fun day.

Tonight one of my wife's ladies' bridge groups is at our house and another seven are scheduled to see what is going on in the basement.  I can't wait.

The vast majority of folks who visit our layouts are polite and are really interested in what they are looking at. Typically, they ask a lot of questions. I think that the hosts get as much of a kick about the visit as do the visitors.

Nice job Art in promoting our hobby. You have always been open about sharing your layout with others.

Admit it Art, the real reason you got into trains was to meet women!

The ladies bridge group visited the layout after they finished playing cards and it was another enjoyable evening.  Here are a few of the comments and questions that I remember.

  • Wow, it is really big.  I haven't seen one this large before.
  • Do you actually build the buildings or do they come that way?
  • Do you like to ride on real trains too?
  • I remember seeing and riding on passenger trains like this.  We went to California on the Super Chief.
  • I saw a train with coal cars just like this recently.
  • It is so cool that you model scenes from your past instead of just running trains.

The trains ran perfectly and the company was fun to visit with, doesn't get much better than that.  One lady wants to bring her grandkids back to see it and another has a friend that is into trains that she wants to get us together.

Spence - I hate to admit it, but you are right.  I was using the excuse that I couldn't start on my stone arch bridge because I have to tear out the temporary bridge and then I can't run trains.  Now that these visitors have been here, there is no reason I can't start construction.

I have been spending way too much time on the forum and not enough on the layout.

I had a forgotten about a similar experience where my wife had a bunch of friends over that were all collectors of Woof & Poofs (we have what seems like hundreds of them). Next thing I know they were all in the train room taking pictures and asking questions. Quite a pleasant surprise.

Gee Art, that one could be taken the wrong way, especially in a room full of women. (sorry, I couldn't resist)

Seriously though, I think that most of us here get a lot of pleasure from this hobby when we share it with others. I know I do. This reminds me that I need to get ready for some visitors myself. My hockey ticket partners are coming over in a few weeks. They haven't seen the layout since last year. Just a few changes since then.

I got an interesting comment related to a built curved grade section of my layout: "Where did you buy that corner piece?"  Most, who would view, have no idea the effort put into some layouts or even some of the structures.  IMO  Layouts, (layout building) are/is a personal thing, best enjoyed by the individual who spent the time.  Obviously not for everyone.
