The irrational fear of roadbed, while irrational, is reason enough not to use it.

Use what you will enjoy

 Roadbed track- Its not "evil to be feared" just different. Different look, sound, etc. It stays together well.

 Sound-Is a bit quieter at some frequencies, louder at others. Seems to me a louder lower freq. "white noise", & less mid's, allowing a more tin like roller bearing sound coming from the wheels/rails to be heard). Smother joints you seem to loose something in the click clack. Again...just different.

 

If the RMT is the old K-Line track, that is nice stuff. Very quiet. I almost made a move to it. It reminds me of Super O with black plastic, and a new center rail.

(I love Super O , but its not exactly everywhere you look).  

 

 Full O will(did?) get you a heavier steel, rounded tie bottoms, wider turns, and a tiny bit more height for avoiding carpet fiber. 

 Regular looks at gears, and axles should be done no matter which track you run on carpet. Razors can often get in close enough spaces to check where eyes cant.

 

If your carpet looses fiber easy, or have hard floors, a tight weave throw rug will help, and isn't a bad idea for stain protection either. A fresh application of Scotch-guard fabric protector doesn't usually hurt either. (test on hidden carpet first!

  A while back, one of the dogs ate the center of a 3 1/2' x 5 oval, spiraled, cotton rope carpet leaving only a "race track". I kept joking it would make the perfect roadbed for a carpet loop.

  The garbage men hauled it away yesterday morning. I should have boxed it up & put it with the extra track. Darn. With 3 layouts, I didn't consider a need for a carpet layout anymore, but could have used it outside in the summer too!
