I was wondering how many members purchased an engine made by the top two manufacturers or others from a dealer(s),that were beyond 2 years of manufacture? How many years beyond the manufacture date have you purchased a new engine? Was the warranty honored.

Myself and other collector/operators have found tinplate Engines at Dealers at great prices that are anywhere from 5 - 11 years old. and in the original shipping cartons. What is the oldest new engine you have purchased, and have you been happy with it?

I was turned down by Lionel customer service two weeks ago on a brand new, in the box, subway set manufactured in 2010 and purchased from a Lionel authorized dealer.  I was told they could not honor the warranty since it was purchased more than 3 years past the manufacturing date.  I was told that my only recourse was to contact the vendor, which luckily is a forum sponsor,  (Nicholas Smith Trains).  Again, luckily, he had another set which he promptly exchanged for the malfunctioning one.

It really depends on the dealer. Many of them assume the cost of repair when selling a NOS Lionel or MTH engine that is beyond the three year mark. Providing that the NOS item came either directly from manufacturer or an authorized distributor.

It just makes good business sense to accept responsibility.

Also you need to beware of dealers who buy NOS at auctions. None of those items have any warranty at all regardless of age.
