Weekend Photo Fun 2/5/16 HONGZ

Attending last weekend's Big Railroad Hobby Show hosted by the Amherst Railway Society at West Springfield, MA provided the opportunity to see many wonderful operating layouts in a variety of scales. One such railroad belonged to the Dry Hill Model Railroad Club from Montague, MA. This year's show represented the club's twenty-second appearance and its ninth displaying an independent layout.

Features worthy of mention included a Coca-Cola plant, Budweiser brewery, well stocked engine terminal and Amtrak station facilities. Equipment replicated a number of roads which have operated in the region over the years, some of which included Boston & Maine, New Haven, Conrail, Providence & Worcester and CSX. There was even a Coke themed train powered by an A-B-A set of EMD cab units in operation.

This wound up being a "bad idea."  The Railworks AeroTrain.  A momentary lapse of reason:

It's a brass model built by Samhongsa in 1988.  No window glazing, no interior except for the cab and observation deck, no interior lighting, OK paint job and the AeroTrain logos had to be customer applied.  Constant light head and tail lights and it does run rather well.

It was frightfully expensive, (over $600 for the basic set of locomotive and three cars, over $100 for the extra car) even in those big 1988 dollars.  But, I just had to have an AeroTrain back then.  The good thing was I personally knew a hobby shop manager back then and he ordered it for me and gave me a good discount.

A few months, after I bought it, Bowser re-released the old Varney AeroTrain, considerably less detailed and considerably less moolah.  And of course, about a decade ago, Con-Cor released their version, which I could've assembled the whole 10 car train for less than what I paid for this thing.

Here's another sight from last week's West Springfield show. This is a scene of the engine terminal on the Large Scale division of the Mohegan & Pequot. A Norfolk Southern SD45 is receiving attention inside the shop building as an Amtrak P42 awaits its turn.

Don't feel bad as I think many of us have done similar things, I know I have with a Key Imports brass N scale N5C caboose.

Just picked up an MTH GP35. First plastic model GP35 in HO to have SP light package.  Model is on par with an Athearn Genesis or Proto 2000.
