On my layout we keep in simple.

The Lionel Scale Hudson is the best looking loco to me and I own two.

The F3's, F7's and E series engines also look good. Again they are scale or close.

The Fairbanks Morse is also scale as are the Geeps.

Those are the main runners. The Little Joes, GG1's, Rectifiers, 44 ton, RDC"s,  Berks and non scale Hudsons do get used but not very often.

Pretty much any British steam loco.  Most mid-to-late 19th century American locomotives as well.

The list of North American locomotives is too large, but I'll list some of my personal favorites (I admit there is a bias towards streamlined locos):

• CPR Royal Hudson
• NYC Hudson (with and without streamlining)
• PRR K4 (again, with and without streamlining)
• PRR T1
• PRR S1
• PRR GG1 (5-stripe green)
• MILW A
• MILW F7 Hudson
• N&W J
• CB&Q E5
• UP E2
• EMD E7 (NYC lightning stripe)
• Alco PA  (ATSF Warbonnet)
• Baldwin RF-16 (PRR 5-stripe green)
• NH EP-5
