First of all, Merry Christmas everyone! The title of this is not a loaded question, although it could probably be perceived that way. I decided a couple wks back to start putting together my first Lionel/MTH Standard Gauge set car by car. Probably be a shelf set for a few years until I start building that dream layout I've been thinking of forever! I haven't been to a show in 20+ years or more (about to correct that) and I have never seen one of the new standard gauge cars in person. That's why my question is an honest one...when I buy a new car, I am curious what to expect? Perfection each & every time? Flaws often? not very often? What's acceptable, what's not? When is it bad enough to send back? What is acceptable damage on them? I also realize we're all different, just looking for your own opinions and impressions here...

This is why I ask. I just bought a brand new Lionel/MTH American Flyer 4021  tinplate standard gauge caboose. This car does not disappoint! I am just stunned by the quality of this car, with one exception, but a big one, I think. The front wall of the caboose is fine until about 1/2 way up the doorway, then it takes a fairly drastic curve, middle of the door to the top of the doorway there is at least a 1/4" difference. It's drastic enough that it's pretty noticable...

But the rest of the caboose is so unbelievably perfect, I just can't help but think this may be the exception, not the rule? And I might add, I purchased this from one of the sponsors of this site, and he has assured me I am more than welcome to return it for a 100% refund which I will do. I really appreciate that but have come to expect that as I have dealt with others here on the forum and it's always been a positive experience.

But I digress, since this is my first car I don't know, when I order another, is this likely to be the case on all of them? Am I being too picky? As mentioned already though the reason I'm questioning this is because the entire rest of the car is absolutely dead mint perfect. Part of me is saying I must be crazy, but the other part of me is telling me this just seems like it may be out of the ordinary. I have collected some nice original sets in last several years in O gauge, and to be honest, I don't think I've seen a flaw quite this bad on an original that I have run into....I have actually considered in the past, purchasing the Presidents Special set or perhaps a Blue Comet to tuck away for that dream layout in the future.... but quite honestly, paying that much for one of those sets, I would expect absolute perfection, but perhaps I expect too much?

Would love to hear all your thoughts on this...what would be or is acceptable to you? Thanks so much for your opinions....

I have the same caboose and AF freight cars and the whole red presidential set and your caboose is an exception not the rule in my experience. Your caboose looks like it may have taken a hit in shipping perhaps.  The back wall where the door is looks buckled.  I would return it to the dealer you bought it from and have them take the replacement out of the box and inspect it before shipping it to you.

Thanks for the replies guys. I didn't know what to think or expect. I thought this was out of the ordinary though. I only know if I was making a product as beautiful as this is, this one would have never made it past quality control. And I think this one had to slip past on accident. The entire rest of the car is just too perfect for this part not to be.

Chris, I thought at first like you, it may have been damaged during shipping. But the more I looked at the car and the packaging, the car just fits so nice and snug in the packaging, & the packaging is perfect yet, so I can't see this happening during shipping after studying it. If it did happen during shipping, I think there would be some sort of other damage also, but the rest of the car & the box & the outer box looked great with only one very minor dent in the side.

The odd thing was this package had been opened up previous to my opening it. Sounds like that was most likely a random inspection by the factory but this is so much more noticeable in person than in my photo's I just can't imagine this passing any inspection by anyone. Whoever opened this had to know this was there. And I could tell is had been unwrapped and inspected prior to my opening. Little disappointed in that but I understand. I'm sort of a nut when it comes to my boxes and how to open them! I'm also a little familiar with factory specs but a 1/4" defect is way off the mark I thought. Very happy to hear this is the exception not the rule though....I'm looking forward to many more in the future. And the red Presidential set, dang, I have dreams about that one!

Mark,

You may be able to gently push "inward" on the area that is bent "outward" and get it to go in place.

Hard to tell if the metal is actually bent or just waiting to "pop" into place.

Either way, if it makes you feel better, the originals from the 1930's often get bent in the same spot as yours, so it is fairly normal.  They usually just bend right back into place.

FYI here is my experience. My set was so far out of gauge it could not make it around an 084 loop! Added washers all around. Finally sent it back and they added smaller washers but much thicker. Not impressed with that set. Good looking but quality on mine was very poor. Roofs didn't fit or latch without work.  Two out of 4 cars the lights did not work due to loose wires. Beautiful red color though.

Thanks Keith...

I actually did contact the gentleman I purchased this from and asked for an exchange or refund, preferrably exchange and he replied almost immediately and offered to refund my entire purchase price once it got back to him, which it should be arriving to him today.

When I started this post I hope I didn't sound like I was complaining, I'm absolutely thrilled these are being produced. Since this was my first modern day reproduction purchase, I was mainly just curious how often this sort of thing happened is all. Although I prefer to be the first to open a brand new box, from now on I will ask the sellers to open them and check them out. Can't go wrong that way.

Thank you all...
