What to do with this Pola Maxi flatbed?

I have a whole fleet of these I use for logging, would also make great WWII military train.

What do you use for couplers?

The reason they are bigger is that they are scale. Since these are originally 2R all you have to do is remove the queer looking couplers and install Kadees, as long as you are using GG or Atlas track. If your using Fast track you will need to replace the current trucks with Weavers(which work the best) or Atlas 3R trucks. Same thing if you are using the claw couplers. Weaver or atlas. Hope this helps.

Even with the new trucks, will this scale flatcar run on 27" or 36"?

Use the 3R plastic Benttendorf trucks.  You should be able to us a number 3 1\2 in screw. And yes 027 or 036 will be no issue.

Alternatively, would it be workable to toss on a set of trucks from the Menards flatcars?

Judging by the one photo I do not think that is a true flat car. It looks more like the bottom to a gondola or box car Pola made..............Paul

I don't see why not. Might have the same effect as the Lionel, Atlas trucks. A lot of it depends on how the Menard's are mounted. Screw thru the bottom or thru the top. 

The Menards are riveted on and are nearly identical to Lionel RTR car trucks.  I could probably take a screw from the bottom of the truck up through the pola lower section.

I'm just looking at the Menards because they are cheap and available nearby and work with my existing cars.
