FALCONSERVICE,

I just looked at the 5161 releases and am confused as well as amazed. Chessie&Conrail never had 5161's that I'm aware of-am I correct? I never saw a 5161 until CSX came out with their "Grain Express" logo on 5161's and these cars were largely used for sugar before grain. That's the "amazed" part of this post.

The "confused "part,is in the fact of the CSX "How Tomorrow Moves" scheme as well as other 'roads that were in Atlas' last release of 5161s-now are they being rerun as the catalog has them listed as "backorder."

The GOLDEN WEST SERVICE GVSR/SSW covered hoppers are Pullman-Standard 4785 CU FT covered hoppers. They are similar but not identical to the 4750. Perhaps they will make this scheme eventually.

Many of the Golden West hoppers were repainted in Sioux City, IA about 15? years ago at Transco Railway  Service (current name). I don't remember what it used to be called. This place even does kosher cleaning of cars.

We see so many grain cars around the area it takes a owner's listing to know who owns the cars. With three majors through here (BNSF, CN, UP) and several rock trains (D&I). Coal, however, is down but this time of year grain, grain, grain.

There will eventually be cuts in the CSX freight car fleet.

Many of the PS-2-CD 4750 covered hoppers from SCL, L&N, B&O and others are over 30 years by now.

Union Pacific has sold off the D&RGW, C&NW, MKT PS-2-CD 4750 covered hoppers from their fleet.

Greenbrier and Trinity are building new covered hoppers for grain service.

Andrew,

Oh yes I understand about the age issue. I misunderstood at 1st.

Oddly enough,in 2011,I took photos of a couple freshly painted CSX 4750s that had to be former hoppers from SCL or Chessie,as they were numbered in the 250,000 series. So some of those cars are still in service,of course if they had 2 years service life when they were repainted,I suppose they'd still have gotten fresh paint.

The Cargill grain facility @ Bremen where I live, hasn't been shipping grain for a couple years now,so I don't get to see grain cars anymore. I was told if the facility didn't load 105 cars at a time,CSX wouldn't do shuttle train business with them. when Cargill 1st took over the facility,it was in the Bremen paper that Cargill could load 105 cars,so am sure this isn't the issue. I talked to someone that works the trains for CSX and they said 105 cars isn't the minimum for shuttle service I think it was more like in the 70-80 car range. CSX had went up on freight rates and NS took over grain service from neighboring elevators.

As Always,

I guess u all know that I'm having a special run of the Atlas O PS-4750 due december this year.

Its 1 road number each of 6 different pink Co-op grain cars.  Available individually or in a 6 car set. So I wouldnt really worry about there only being "4 new PS4750's per year".  As long as people want them, I'll keep putting in for special runs.

I announced these about 2 weeks ago, and they are half sold out already.  Hoping to do another run of another 6 grain co-ops next year.

You can see the current run here......
