The first train I remember was my grandmother´s under the tree in the late 1960´s, which I found out later was a circle of track, a 1033 90 watt transformer, a 2037 loco and some postwar cars. When I turned seven, she gave me a Lionel Black Diamond? set with the 8441 steam loco with smoke and the Mighty Sound Of Static, which drove my mom nuts. I still have the set here, and I gave it to my son when he turned seven.

My first train was a Lionel 2572 train set with 2359 B&M GP-9, 6544 missile firing car, 3519 satellite launching car, 3830 Operating Sub car, 6448 exploding boxcar, and 3535 Security car I still have that set but not the set I started with I recently ( within last few years remade the set up as got rid of it back on late 80's as no room for it while I was in the navy).

great topic! i was fortunate enough to have a grandfather who was a train nut. he bought his trains from 1950 to about 1955/56 for my dad, but i think he really got them for himself. cool thing is the lionel catalog has the stamp from the store he used to buy his trains from in melrose park IL. for engines i have a pennsy 681 & 671 and an erie lackawanna FM train master w/ maroon top. missing OG instructions for 364 log conveyor, 362 barrel loader, 450 signal bridge, 145 gateman, zw transformer & 397 coal loader.
