I want both the EMD/Progress Rail SD70ACe-T4 and Wabtec/GE ET44AC on my layout with Legacy (Vision Line!) and some awesome new features. I think that while 3rd Rail and/or MTH could pull off accurate, amazing, and detailed O-Scale models of both of these modern locomotives, I think Lionel could make them better with the technology of their Vision Line and Legacy. The SD70ACe-T4 and ET44AC could even be made as Lionel Brass Hybrid locomotives as well. I'd prefer them to be Vision engines.

Paint Schemes for SD70ACe-T4:

-CSX (they call their 10 units ST70AH)

-UP (SD70AH-T4)

-EMD Prototype blue, white, and green livery (I like this paint scheme; it reminds me of GE's ES44AC Hybrid livery)

-EMD Lease Unit ("Banana") livery

-BNSF (SD70ACeP4-T4 Prototype) livery (PR/EMD painted 2 SD70ACeP4-T4 prototypes in BNSF livery; BNSF doesn't roster any production versions of the SD70ACeP4-T4; pity because I really want one of these)

-NS (NS cancelled their order of 10 units; they are PR/EMD lease units)

-KCS and CP Rail have leased these engines, so those liveries could also be made as fictional liveries.

-A fictional military livery would be awesome on the SD70ACe-T4.

Paint Schemes for ET44AC:

-UP (C45AH; both in new livery and older large flag liveries)

-BNSF (ET44C4 with correct truck details)

-NS

-CN (including heritage units)

-CSX (ET44AH)

-KCS

-A fictional military livery

-GE Prototype (with correct dynamic brake hump detail)

Features:

-Correct truck side frame piping and air cylinder details on BNSF ET44C4 (could be carried over to Legacy ES44 to make accurate BNSF and FEC ES44C4s)

-Rotating bearing caps on trucks (new Vision feature)

-All standard Legacy features

-4-digit addressing

-Dynamic brake feature with sounds (Another new Vision feature)

-Sand fill/sand application sounds; crewtalk included (Also a new Vision feature)

-Rotating radiator/dynamic brake fans on SD70ACe-T4

-New modern Vision Freight Cars to pull behind these engines (new Ethanol Tank Cars, Modern Boxcars, Modern Reefers, etc.)

-Accurate 12-1010J Prime Mover sounds on SD70ACe-T4 recorded from an actual engine

-Accurate horn and bell sounds on both locomotives

If both or either of these modern locomotives are made by Lionel (or possibly even 3rd Rail or MTH), I would buy a BNSF ET44C4 and/or UP C45AH and a UP SD70AH-T4, PR/EMD SD70ACe-T4 Prototype, and/or a BNSF SD70ACeP4-T4 Prototype.

If mth would make one, it would be a huge “we’re back” to making new premier locos.

People don’t seem to have gotten the message. MTH is not in the market anymore for all-new locomotives. It simply is reusing old tooling it retained to make limited runs of road names, mostly for hobby shops and online dealers as special runs. The company has not produced new tooling for years now after initially planning to close shop completely. It has sold off much of its product line and has never announced any plans to again produce all-new models.

Unfortunately, resurrecting a 7 1/2- year-old thread on this topic seems pointless. Obviously, none of the manufacturers in any scale found a compelling interest in 2015 then, and there are fewer manufacturers now. In general, I find that manufacturers are not interested in revisiting what seemed like reasonable ideas, some which seemed compelling and logical to me. That leads me to believe these companies have studied their markets and see to little interest in anything other than what has been produced. My wishlist hasn’t dwindled in more than 15 years for O gauge models.

Ain't it the truth??

I was further amazed to find an apparent lack of marketability for these engines among the hordes of rabid HO-philes.   Not even a near-clandestine paltry production run of the SD70ACe-T4 in specialty brass with an if-you-ask-you-can't-afford-it price tag!

Of course, some opinations and dreams have amazing survivability.   Maybe that's a good thing?

Sooner or later someone will have a vision to give Lionel competition and make a good bit of money, or it will be a somewhat profitable passion project(e.g. menards) . Mth is a perfect vehicle for someone if they want to do something.

Sounds like market denial. When MTH was challenging Lionel in the 1990s, the hobby also had K-Line, Williams, Weaver, 3rd Rail, Atlas and Right-of-Way. Eight manufacturers of locomotives. Take a count again for those producing new models (not models from existing tooling). Answer: two. Lionel and 3rd Rail, the latter only producing select, limited production models.

As for Menards, I hope you aren’t thinking an 83-year-old man is willing to embark on a train product line that will set the toy train market on fire again. One more time, Menards is a home improvement company with massive stores in 15 states, not a model train business. John entered the field to add products to a hobby he loved, but in the past 15 years has pretty well established that his desire did not extend to making it a priority in his business dealings. He enjoys the hobby. That’s why he has done what he has done.

Someone else like John Menard Jr. taking on a “passion project?” Who is this mythical person, and why would they invest hundreds of millions in a product line to satisfy several thousand people?

There are immensely fewer O gauge products being produced today for the high-end market than there was a quarter-century ago. And fewer businesses selling them — two-thirds of the nation’s hobby shops have disappeared from the peak.

The market is shrinking, not growing. Face it.

The reality is actually several hundred people at best in O scale.

However, I'll add to this conversation in the resurrected version by stating that EMD and Wabtec haven't developed much "new tooling" in the last 7 years to speak of either in the 1:1 world.
