ok i know some are you are even wondering why i'd even want to do that but let me explain. ok the engines are lionel j1a's tmcc no 28078 and legacy 11300. i have the pleasure of owning both, the tmcc has been a bulletproof terrific great engine, then the legacy one came along and of course there is the better legacy control but the sound system leaves alot to be desired in the legacy one. if i have both on the layout at the same time one sounds way better than the other in my opinion. so i got a call from a friend that also has the 28078 tmcc model, unfortunatly he had a mishap moving it from the shelf to layout and the engine slipped out of his hands, so he offered it to me which got me thinking since the tender is fine could i make it work with the legacy engine. i know i'd lose the quilling whistle but the tmcc whistle sounds better anyways, and if i'd want the quilling whistle i'd still have the legacy tender to use,  i'm thinking that i'd still retain the 4 chuffs though, and of course the crew talk would say the wrong cab number.  from looking at the ones i have now it looks like the drawbar would need some modification to make the ir sensors line up. i dont want to tear apart the tmcc tender i have now to find out if it would function behind the legacy engine. just wondering if anyone out there has tried this and if it's possible to do. i just dont want to waste money on a broken engine if i cant make some use of it. any helpful info would be appreciated.

Well, I think the first problem you will have assuming they both have wireless tethers is most TMCC engines have the sensors below the drawbar and most Legacy engines have the sensor above the draw bar.

I know someone who has upgraded many engines to Legacy using the original Lionel Legacy modular boards but has to settle for RS4 audio as Lionel will not sell Legacy Railsounds. Most but not all sounds work.

To get a reasonable sound from the tender TMCC equipped, you can try the following steps.

As you can't set a combination of Legacy Motor control and TMCC s via the remote, you can try this combination via the Legacy System Utility. You have to attach the base station with the already entered loco ID to the Legacy System Utility via an appropriate Computer, applying an Engine Data Change. The Settings selected are then for motor control  'Legacy', the sound control selected is 'TMCC'(or RS). Then you save these settings and then you can operate a Legacy-Motor/TMCC-RS combination.

I did so for several diesel engines using Legacy for motor control and TMCC for the sound. I used the modular components for early Legacy engines. Motor drivers as separate items are available. As mother board I used a the mother board of the SD70Ace(first Legacy engines).

Sound restrictions for this solution:

- rev up/down are random, you must trigger them manually via the remote.          - brake sound is impossible          - horn is possible(naturally not quilling)   

TMCC sound was always RS4 ,I did not this way for a steamer  , but I think it would work as well.
